Rouen Cathedral, Brown Harmony W1319hand painted reproduction

The western portal of Rouen fills almost the entire canvas. Under brown and golden light, pinnacles, arches and statues lose their mineral hardness to become a vibrant surface. Painted in 1892 then signed and dated in 1894, this version of the Musée d'Orsay is listed as Wildenstein 1319.

Look at the work

The front portal under brown and golden light

Monet frames so close that the towers and the square disappear. The rose occupies the upper center while the three portals form a dark base. Gothic architecture remains identifiable, but details are absorbed by small oriented touches.

Ochres, pinkish browns and muted blues alternate on the reliefs. The protruding parts catch a warm light; the hollows change to purple and gray. This temperature difference is enough to restore the depth of the facade.

In Brown Harmony, the stone is never monochrome: each relief changes color depending on its place in the light.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

The RF 2779 canvas from the Musée d'Orsay

The museum identifies the work as Rouen Cathedral. The portal seen from the front, Brown Harmony. Its format of 107 × 74 cm and the Wildenstein number 1319 distinguish it precisely in the series.

02

Painted facing the gate

Monet worked from a rented room opposite the cathedral at the beginning of 1892. He changed his canvas when the light evolved, seeking not a definitive view but several states of the same motif.

03

A completion date recorded in 1894

The signature "Claude Monet 94" does not mean that the Rouen observation dates from this year. The painter resumed his paintings in Giverny before presenting twenty Cathedrals at Durand-Ruel in 1895.

Read this specific version

Only one image is used: the exact view of W1319 distributed by the national collections, preserved as a real WebP of 448 × 650 px, without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

The rose as an optical center

The circular bay should not become too sharp a geometric design. It is built by a dark heart surrounded by light touches which retain the sensation of stone and air.

Color02

Brown ocher, old pink and blue purple

The warm dominant is constantly balanced by cold notes in niches and portals. Without these blues, the Brown Harmony would lose its atmospheric relief.

Matter03

A paste organized by architecture

The keys briefly follow an arcade, gable or column before stopping. Their irregular thickness must remain visible to reflect the light hanging on the facade.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The Musée d'Orsay documents this oil on canvas measuring 107 × 74 cm under inventory RF 2779; the catalog raisonné class Wildenstein 1319.

Identification01

Brown Harmony, Wildenstein 1319

The full title specifies the front framing of the portal. The canvas bears the signature and date "Claude Monet 94" at the bottom left.

Collection02

Musée d'Orsay, RF 2779

The French state acquired the work from Monet in 1907. It is today kept at the Musée d'Orsay under this inventory number.

Series03

A cathedral, several hours

The different versions are not copies. Each records a particular relationship between the portal, time and light, hence the importance of the subtitle Brown Harmony.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The exact version RF 2779, corresponding to Wildenstein 1319
  • The original vertical format of 107 × 74 cm
  • The large rose centered above the three darkened portals
  • The balance between warm ochres and blue-purple shadows
