Mont Riboudet in Rouen in spring W216hand painted reproduction

A clear path crosses green and yellow fields before joining a few houses at the foot of Mont Riboudet. The hillsides follow one another under a blue sky washed with clouds, while young trees punctuate the countryside. Monet painted this view in early spring 1872, during a stay with his brother Léon in the vicinity of Rouen.

Look at the work

The path connects the foreground fields to the hills of Rouen

The beige track starts from the lower right corner, narrows as it advances, then disappears near the houses. It separates the strips of meadow while leading towards the blue-green slope of Mt. The small white and red constructions mark the middle of the composition.

Yellow spots light up the fields and respond to the cream clouds. The trees on the left, still not very leafy, reveal the relief behind them. Monet juxtaposes greens, blues and yellows without rigid outline, giving the landscape the changing freshness of the start of the season.

Mount Riboudet is not treated as a spectacular peak: it becomes the gentle depth of an everyday landscape, observed before the advance of the city.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A perspective constructed by the path

Its curve starts from the viewer and heads towards the group of houses. The horizontal bands of the fields slow down this movement and maintain the balance between depth and surface.

02

Juxtaposed colors that announce impressionism

The Sotheby's notice highlights the nearby beaches of green, blue and yellow. Painted directly on the canvas outdoors, they describe the luminous sensation rather than a continuous academic pattern.

03

A campaign soon to be transformed by the industry

The site was located between Rouen and Déville, near rapidly developing areas. This view nevertheless remains rural, without fireplace or railway, unlike several paintings created by Monet during the same stay.

Read this specific version

The visual corresponds to Mont Riboudet in Rouen in spring, oil on canvas from 1872, 56 × 74 cm, signed lower right and listed Wildenstein 216. The unique WebP measures 2,880 × 2,163 px, definition of the exact public file, without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

The path must not become a uniform strip

Beiges, pinks, blues and greens shape its surface and edges. These variations integrate it into the fields rather than placing it over the landscape.

Color02

Hills change temperature with distance

Warm green in the foreground, blue green in the middle then cooler blue on the horizon create distance. The contours remain flexible under the light.

Matter03

The houses are small but structuring

A few light rectangles, red roofs and dark accents are enough. Their role is to measure the scale of the hillside, not to become the main subject.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

Painted in early spring 1872, this oil on canvas measures 56 × 74 cm. It is kept in private collections and bears number 216 of the Wildenstein catalog raisonné.

Stay01

Monet works near his brother Léon

At the beginning of 1872, he went to the surroundings of Rouen and painted around a dozen landscapes. Mont Riboudet was then located between the city and Déville, where his brother lived.

Provenance02

Durand-Ruel then Gustave Caillebotte

The merchant Paul Durand-Ruel bought the painting from Monet in February 1873. Around 1876, the painter and collector Gustave Caillebotte in turn acquired it for his personal collection.

Method03

Painting without preparatory drawing

Sotheby's links this work to the group of 1872 where Monet directly applied the pigment to the canvas in the open air. Light and shadow are established by color ratios rather than by prior drawing.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • Respect the curve and narrowing of the path.
  • Juxtapose greens, yellows and blues without standardizing them.
  • Keep the houses small at the foot of the hillside.
  • Preserve the luminous transparency of the spring sky.
