À propos de l’œuvre

La butte Montmartre, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · April - May 1886 · Paris, Montmartre

La Butte Montmartre, F266Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

Seen from the north, the mound still retains its mills, vegetable gardens, cabins and palisades. Van Gogh painted this panorama a few weeks after his arrival in Paris, with a still earthy palette that lighter greens and blues were already crossing.

Look at the work

The fences lead from the foreground gardens to the mills

The cabins and small plots occupy the entire lower half. Their oblique alignments rise towards the ridge, where a large mill, a second smaller one and buildings stand out against the sky.

The vast blue-gray sky calms the density of the gardens. A small, almost square retouch, slightly to the right of the center, corresponds according to the museum to an intervention by Van Gogh around a hole in the pictorial layer.

The Butte Montmartre F266/JH1175 is an oil on canvas measuring 38.1 × 61.1 cm painted in April - May 1886. The Kroeller-Müller Museum preserves it under the inventory KM 109.824.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The bill still hesitates between the brown density of Nuenen and a Parisian search for light. The shapes are meticulous in the foreground, while the sky is brushed more widely.

01

The fences create depth

Their diagonals intersect and tighten towards the ridge. They cut the vegetable gardens into successive plans without rigid architectural perspective.

02

The mills form an active horizon line

The large mill dominates the silhouette, but the roofs and the small mill extend its rhythm. This frieze reduces the transition between countryside and city.

03

The sky opposes a freer surface

Its blues, grays and whites are placed in large touches. This breathing highlights the brown and green details of the gardens below.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The instructions from the Kroeller-Müller Museum set the format, the dating from April - May 1886 and the inventory KM 109,824.

Montmartre

A still rural hill

In 1886, the northern margins of Montmartre retained mills, crops and small buildings, even as the expansion of Paris quickly transformed the sector.

Transition

The palette still looks towards the Netherlands

The red browns and earthy yellows are reminiscent of Nuenen, but the greens, blues and whites bear witness to early Parisian experiences of color and light.

Matter

A retouch performed by Van Gogh

The museum explains that the square touch of the sky covers a lack of paint; other neighboring brands visually attenuate this correction.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must preserve the panorama, the mills, the cabins, the network of fences, the green plots, the dark ridge and the blue-gray sky.

  • The large mill slightly to the left of the center
  • The diagonals of the palisades and paths
  • The cabins distributed in the foreground
  • The strip of buildings on the ridge
  • The difference in touches between sky and gardens
