À propos de l’œuvre
Montmartre : derrière le Moulin de la Galette, par Vincent van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh · July 1887 · Paris
Montmartre behind the Moulin de la Galette, F316Reproduction of oil painting on canvas
From the hill of Montmartre, Van Gogh looks northwest: fenced gardens occupy the foreground, Paris extends below and the hills of Meudon close the horizon.
Look at the work
A city observed behind the gardens
Two clear paths border very structured plots. Fences, stakes and small buildings slow down the gaze before opening onto the distant city.
On a clear preparation, Van Gogh alternates fine lines, quick dashes and color punctuations. Greens, pinks, blues and whites give the vast canvas an impressionistic vibration.
This July 1887 view is one of the largest landscapes painted by Van Gogh. The subject is near his Parisian accommodation, but the monumental format transforms the gardens of Montmartre into a large modern panorama.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
With its 81 × 100 cm, F316/JH1246 is among Van Gogh's greatest landscapes. The Van Gogh Museum preserves it under number s0018V1962.
A very distant horizon
The gardens-city-hills succession creates considerable depth. The heights of Meudon are still visible beyond the urban fabric.
Fences as frames
The diagonal and vertical barriers divide the foreground into cells and organize an otherwise very open scene.
A deliberately varied touch
Light lines, dots and small commas coexist on the light background, a sign of the personal assimilation of impressionism.
Documented benchmarks
Precisely identify the original work
The museum identifies the view towards the northwest and highlights the variety of the brush as well as the light colors acquired through contact with the Impressionists.
Towards the hills of Meudon
Van Gogh paints from Montmartre towards the northwest; the reliefs visible in the distance allow us to understand the extent of the panorama.
A canvas 100 cm wide
This exceptional dimension gives the modest allotment gardens a presence comparable to that of a large exhibition landscape.
Presented to the Independents in 1888
The work appears in the fourth exhibition of the Society of Independent Artists, opened in Paris in the spring of 1888.
Your reproduction
What the painter must preserve
The copy must retain the depth of the panorama, the finesse of the fences and the diversity of the small touches, without losing the city in an indistinct background.
- The enclosed gardens in the foreground
- The white path on the left
- Diagonal stakes and fences
- The city under the bright sky
- Meudon hills on the horizon
