An almost square format chosen for the series
The ratio of 89.9 × 92.7 cm concentrates the pattern and limits the panoramic effect. The dark mass can thus occupy an entire side without crushing the vast light area which responds to it.

Claude Monet · 1897 · Art Institute 1933.1156 · W1475
In this Morning on the Seine, the fog almost completely erases the landscape. A dark bank remains on the left, while a vast light of pale blue, pink and cream invades the center and the right. The trees, the sky and the water merge; only a few vertical traces and their reflection still make it possible to reconstruct the place.

Look at the work
The left side brings together the deepest values. The blues, greens and purples form an irregular column, crossed by small light touches which suggest openings in the foliage. This lateral presence serves as a point of support for the entire rest of the canvas.
On the right, the light layers overlap without a firm outline. Sky blue passages descend into the water, then mingle with very pale roses and warm whites. Near the bottom, a few horizontal touches are enough to signal the current and differentiate the surface of the river from the misty air.
The subject almost disappears, but the painting remains very constructed: a dense edge, open light and the reflection that connects them.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
The ratio of 89.9 × 92.7 cm concentrates the pattern and limits the panoramic effect. The dark mass can thus occupy an entire side without crushing the vast light area which responds to it.
Monet mitigates the separation between sky and water. The Art Institute points out that it has taken up and melted this area, so that the depth depends on variations in material more than on a drawn limit.
The whites are never uniform: they receive blue, pink, purple and slight green marks. Reproduction must keep these temperatures distinct to avoid a large gray area without relief.
Reference image
The single reference image measures 3000 × 2904 px. It precisely reproduces the work 1933.1156 and has been encoded as a real WebP to its native definition, without artificial enlargement.
This very close vertical mass gives the scale of the landscape. Its edges gradually dissolve towards the center, which causes the eye to enter the mist rather than blocking it.
Light tones dominate, but subtle deviations organize the scene. Lilac connects the bank to the mist, blue suggests water, and pink warms the central opening.
High definition photography shows friction, molten layers and thicker gestures. These differences should remain noticeable in an oil reproduction, even when the pattern appears vaporous.
Documented benchmarks
These landmarks concern the Bras de Seine near Giverny (Fog) of the Art Institute of Chicago, inventory 1933.1156 and Wildenstein 1475.
This oil on canvas from 1897 measures 89.9 × 92.7 cm. It is signed and dated "Claude Monet 97" in the lower left corner.
For the Mornings, Monet worked from a stable boat, near the meeting between the Epte and the Seine. Several canvases could be prepared to continue each effect when the corresponding light returned.
The work belongs to the legacy of Mr. and Mrs. Martin A. Ryerson. The number 1933.1156 identifies it among the important set of paintings by Monet preserved in Chicago.
