A pine tree with widely spread branches frames the bay of Antibes, whose ramparts and towers appear in a pink mist beyond the turquoise water. Signed and dated Claude Monet 88 lower right, this oil on canvas measuring 65.7 × 82.1 cm is kept at the Philadelphia Museum of Art under number 1978-1-22 and corresponds to Wildenstein 1170.

The nearby pine makes the distant city emerge in the pink light of the morning

The tree occupies the entire right half, its trunk rising from the shore before dividing into blue and purple branches. The city forms a low band on the left, separated from the viewer by the bay and softened by the atmosphere.

The foliage mixes yellow, blue, green and mauve; the trunk combines red, pink and purple. Opposite, the ramparts are built with small touches of cream and pink, above green water covered in blues.

Antibes is not described as precise architecture: the city is a luminous presence that the bay, the mist and the pine branches make appear in the distance.

Unlike the most vibrant views of Antibes, W1170 combines soft pinks, blues and greens. This range gives the morning a calm light rather than overwhelming heat.

Purchased in Monet by Boussod, Valadon et Cie in October 1888

The painting was acquired the same year of its execution, then passed through several American collections before entering the museum.

Legacy of Charlotte Dorrance Wright in 1978

The work joined the Philadelphia Museum of Art and received the number 1978-1-22. Today it belongs to the European painting collection.
