A Provençal portrait dreamed of across Japan

The word "mousmé" comes from the novel Madame Chrysanthème by Pierre Loti and designates a young Japanese woman. Van Gogh does not, however, paint a Japanese model: he gives this title to an Arlesian whose youth, very colorful outfit and restrained pose evoke his ideal of Japan.

The curved wooden armchair draws a large black circle behind the body. The vertically striped bodice meets a blue skirt strewn with orange polka dots; the face and hands are shaped by touches of pink, green and yellow. The flowered branch discreetly connects the two hands.

The portrait associates a real person from Arles with an imaginary construction nourished by Japanese prints and contemporary literature.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The complementary red-green and blue-orange, as well as the striped and punctuated patterns, give the portrait its intensity without distracting attention from the gaze.

A garment in two rhythms

The stripes of the bodice lengthen the bust; the orange polka dots of the skirt, on the contrary, create a vibrant and expansive surface.

A sprig of oleander

The pale flowers bring a delicate detail to the center of the skirt and connect the young woman to the Mediterranean garden.

An almost empty bottom

Water green describes no interior. It isolates the silhouette like a solid color in a print and reinforces the reds of the garment.

Accession 1963.10.151 and references F431/JH1519 identify the portrait of Washington, painted in Arles in July 1888.

Van Gogh borrowed "mousmé" from Madame Chrysanthème, a very popular novel which contributed to the French fascination with Japan.
