À propos de l’œuvre
Le Pont de Trinquetaille, par Vincent van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh · October 1888 · Arles
The Staircase of the Trinquetaille Bridge, F481Reproduction of oil painting on canvas
Stairs, metal walkway and pressed silhouettes fit together around a street lamp, in an urban view of Arles with unexpected greens and blues.
Look at the work
The bridge observed from its grand staircase
The Trinquetaille bridge connected the center of Arles to the district located on the other bank of the Rhône. Van Gogh shows neither the river nor the entire structure here: he places himself at the foot of the staircase and assembles the steps, the stone abutment, the side arch and the metal beams.
Small figures go up, down or cross the deck. They give the scale of this complex architecture. The street lamp and the young tree in the foreground form two fragile verticals in front of the large diagonals of the stairs and the blue grid of the bridge.
The modern subject becomes an almost abstract construction of oblique lines, but passers-by and street details keep the scene alive in everyday life.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
This F481 version from October 1888 is distinct from F426, painted in June from the Quai du Rhône with the water and the bridge seen in profile.
A network of diagonals
Steps, ramps and beams converge in several directions. Their superposition creates a deliberately unstable depth.
Tiny passers-by
Black, blue and orange silhouettes punctuate the levels of the staircase and the apron, giving rhythm and scale to the monument.
A sea green light
Pierre, marches and sky are crossed by blue, pale green and lilac. A few oranges with street lights and clothes awaken this cold range.
Documented benchmarks
Precisely identify the original work
The references F481/JH1604 and the format 73.5 × 92.5 cm identify the large view of the staircase kept in a private collection.
Trinquetaille
The bridge made it possible to cross the Rhône between the old center of Arles and the Trinquetaille district.
A drawing for Gauguin
In October 1888, Van Gogh accompanied his description of recent work with a sketch of the bridge addressed to Paul Gauguin.
Private work
The painting belongs to a particular collection; no museum should be attributed to him in this sheet.
Your reproduction
What the painter must preserve
The reproduction must retain the legible geometry of the bridge, the differences in value between the steps and the silhouettes, as well as the cold light of the whole.
- The large steps which occupy the foreground
- The blue metal frame of the bridge
- Passers-by spread over several levels
- The yellow and red street lamp in the center right
- The stone arch opening onto the side street
