Le pont de Waterloo, Londres, par Claude Monet

Claude Monet · 1903 · Waterloo Bridge seen from the Savoy Hotel

The Waterloo Bridge, Londonhand painted reproduction

The clear bridge crosses a purple-blue Thames while the chimneys on the south bank dissolve in a pink fog: this version of Pittsburgh transforms the industrial landscape into a luminous vibration.

Look at the work

The bridge becomes the bright border between water and industry

Monet sets up his view from above, from the Savoy Hotel. The apron and arches of Waterloo Bridge form a long, light strip that cuts the composition. Small touches of yellow, orange and blue suggest traffic; they give a human scale to the monument without precisely describing the vehicles.

Beyond the bridge, the large chimneys on the south bank rise in an atmosphere laden with smoke. They are not drawn by contours: they appear in differences of blue, mauve and pink. On the river, the arches extend into unstable reflections which prevent the construction from becoming a simple rigid line.

Monet does not hide the industrial city behind the fog: he shows how smoke, water and light give this city a new color.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

Analysis of The Waterloo Bridge, London - Claude Monet
01

A clear horizontal in the middle of the canvas

The bridge separates two more diffuse areas: the smoky sky and the river. Its piers and arches structure the space without interrupting the circulation of colors.

02

The south shore as an industrial spectrum

The chimneys remain vertical but their edges blend into the air. Cold tones keep them away, while a few warm accents signal urban activity.

03

Reflections that undo the stone

Under each arch, blues mingle with pinks and yellows. The reflection maintains the rhythm of the bridge while transforming it into moving material.

Details and visual documents

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The ivory color of the bridge without making it uniform
  • The tiny warm accents of traffic
  • The gradual disappearance of chimneys in the sky
  • The blue and mauve reflections which extend the arches
