The Kolsås stretches like a long purple-blue wall under a pale yellow sky. At the foot of the massif, a few houses, bare trees and snow-covered roofs form a narrow strip. Monet chooses a format a hundred centimeters wide: the mountain does not emerge like a peak, it occupies the horizon with a continuous presence.
Look at the work
The base of the mountain follows an almost horizontal line, interrupted by rocky overhangs and gentle slopes. The village remains very low and gives scale. On the right, several black or purple-brown trees stand out against the snow and lead the gaze towards the distance.
The creamy yellow sky contrasts with the cold blue of the relief without producing a brutal opposition. The snow takes on lilac, pink and gray green. The rocky parts appear in inclined touches which follow the structure of the massif rather than in a detailed geological drawing.
W1406 transforms Kolsås into a large horizontal breath, held between the heat of the sky and the blues of the snow.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
Monet painted the massif during his Norwegian stay in 1895, fascinated by its silhouette and by the transformations of the snow. He compares this pattern to a Nordic Fuji-yama and approaches it in series, under different lights and framing.
With 65 × 100 cm, the canvas adopts a more panoramic ratio than several neighboring versions. This choice accentuates the stretching of the relief and deliberately reduces the sky and the village, giving the massif an almost monumental stability.
The museum notice indicates that the painting was bequeathed in 1966 by Michel Monet, son of the artist. It thus belongs to the large ensemble donated to the Marmottan museum, which has become an essential reference for Monet's work.

The only official reference image measures 1,500 × 947 px. It comes from notice 5100 of the Marmottan Monet museum and was encoded as a real WebP with its native definition, without artificial enlargement.
The summit is not centered like an emblem. Variations in height punctuate a continuous mass, while the village and trees form a tiny counterpoint in the lower register.
The warm sky makes the mountain appear colder. The transitions, however, remain gentle: purples circulate in the sky and pale yellows return to the lit areas of the ground.
The direction of the brush follows slopes, then fragments into rocks and trees. The copy must retain this change in orientation so that the mountain maintains its volume without heavy contouring.
Documented benchmarks
These landmarks concern exactly Mount Kolsås in Norway from the Marmottan Monet museum, inventory 5100 and Wildenstein 1406.
The 1895 canvas measures 65 × 100 cm without frame. The museum marks the "Claude Monet" workshop stamp at the bottom right and preserves the work under number 5100.
The artist's son transmitted his father's painting and an exceptional collection of works to the museum. This family provenance explains the presence of the workshop stamp rather than a signature affixed at the time of execution.
W1406 belongs to the ensemble painted around Sandvika. From one canvas to another, Monet moves houses, brings relief closer together or modifies the sky in order to study the effects of light on the same snow-capped mountain.
