À propos de l’œuvre

Montagnes à Saint-Rémy, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · July 1889 · Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, France

Mountains in Saint-Rémy, F622Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

The Alpilles stand like a wall of rock under an almost empty lilac blue sky. Van Gogh fills each slope with touches of green, ocher and purple, then places at the foot of the massif a tiny dark shelter which gives the scale of this monumental nature.

Look at the work

A huge mountain facing a tiny shelter

The foreground is pale terrain crossed by bushes and a winding path. Behind it, the rocks occupy almost two thirds of the composition, cut by strong dark blue contours.

The ridge rises and falls in large diagonals before opening onto an almost uniform sky. A small dark construction, lost at the foot of the slope, accentuates the height and harshness of the massif.

The landscape goes beyond simple topographical sight: the disproportionate scale of the rocks and the agitation of the brush make us feel both the power of nature and human fragility.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The Guggenheim Museum preserves Mountains in Saint-Rémy in the Thannhauser Collection under inventory 78.2514.24. The canvas bears F622/JH1766.

01

The massif fills almost the entire field

The horizon line is very high and leaves only a small strip in the sky. This choice physically brings the viewer closer to the rock walls.

02

The rock becomes a mosaic of touches

Blues, greens, purples and ochres do not follow a regular pattern. Their multiple directions give the Alpilles an almost living energy.

03

The small shelter measures the immensity

The dark construction is just a detail in the landscape. Its presence, however, provides a human scale and makes the mountain even more monumental.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

Mountains at Saint-Rémy F622/JH1766 was painted in July 1889. The work measures approximately 71.8 × 90.8 cm and belongs to the Guggenheim Museum.

Pattern

The Alpilles around Saint-Paul-de-Mausole

Van Gogh discovered from the asylum a relief very different from the plains of Arles. He paints the limestone ridges as a succession of colored masses rather than as a precise geological study.

Meaning

A powerful nature in the face of human presence

The Guggenheim notice highlights the vulnerability of human existence to this landscape. The almost invisible shelter reinforces this opposition of scale.

Collection

The gift of Justin K. Thannhauser

The painting belongs to the Thannhauser Collection, donated to the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum by Justin K. Thannhauser. It bears inventory 78.2514.24.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy should retain the dark blue outlines, green and purple flashes of the rock, the light path, the small construction and the large lilac blue sky.

  • The angular ridge that crosses the entire width
  • The short and colorful touches of the walls
  • The tiny dark shelter at the foot of the massif
  • The calm sky opposed to the movement of the rocks
