Suzanne Hoschedé stands on a flowery slope, facing right and seen from a very low point. Her green parasol cuts a large oblique shape in the sky, while her light scarf floats to the left. Signed and dated Claude Monet 86, this oil on canvas measuring 130.5 × 89.3 cm is kept at the Musée d'Orsay under the number RF 2620 and corresponds to Wildenstein 1076.

Look at the work

The low angle places the young woman, the umbrella and the wind in the same space of sky

The ground rises to the bottom of the dress and leaves no distant horizon. The silhouette rises almost to the full height; the umbrella occupies the upper right quarter, while the scarf and grass drive the movement in the opposite direction.

The cream dress receives reflected blues, pinks, yellows and greens. The face remains in the shadow of the umbrella, but the bodice and skirt capture a diffused light that connects them to the blue, white and mauve sky.

Monet does not take his face off in front of a setting: the wind, the light and the colors of the meadow pass through the clothing and make Suzanne part of the outdoors.

Low angle almost removes the traditional depth. The body appears to extend into the sky and the viewer physically feels the slope on which Monet placed his model.

Its deep green contrasts with the pale blues of the sky. Its oblique axis joins the arm and stabilizes the silhouette despite the movement of the scarf.

A deliberately not very detailed face

The hat and parasol sift the features. Monet favors the general lighting effect and posture rather than a meticulous psychological portrait.

Its pale touches fade into the sky while indicating the direction of the wind. Too sharp an outline would make it heavy.

Gift from Michel Monet in 1927

The work entered the national collections thanks to the artist's son, passed through the Louvre and the Jeu de Paume, then was assigned to the Musée d'Orsay in 1986.
