À propos de l’œuvre

Le Moulin de la Galette, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · Autumn 1886 · Paris, Montmartre

Le Moulin de la Galette, F226Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

The Radet mill overlooks a red cabaret at the corner of a street in Montmartre. A black street lamp, a few passers-by and the wine and liquor signs give this urban view the precision of an observed moment, while the large wings stand out against an almost white sky.

Look at the work

A historic mill appears among shops and passers-by

The red building occupies the center and follows the slope of the street. Above, the dark body of the mill narrows between two oblique wings; on the left, the street lamp creates a vertical as strong as the mill mast.

A group gathers in the lower left corner, a woman stands in front of the entrance and a man walks higher up the street. These small figures scale the depth between the light sidewalk, facades and roofs of Montmartre.

Le Moulin de la Galette F226/JH1172 is a 38 × 46 cm oil on canvas painted in Paris in the fall of 1886. This version is kept at the Langmatt Museum in Baden under number 203/GZ.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

Van Gogh organizes the image with some very readable lines: diagonals of the wings and the street, vertical of the street lamp, red rectangle of the cabaret. The thick touch of sky and ground connects these architectural forms.

01

The street lamp balances the wings of the mill

Its black silhouette is placed in front of the large area of clear sky. It brings the scene closer to the spectator and prevents the mill, shifted to the left, from tilting the composition.

02

The signs become pictorial accents

Yellow and white words, dark doors and red frames punctuate the facade. Van Gogh is not looking for exact typography: the letters are treated like touches of color.

03

The slope of the street leads towards the houses

The sidewalk goes up to the right and narrows behind the passerby. This diagonal opens the urban space beyond the cabaret despite the tight framing.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

F226/JH1172, the 203/GZ inventory and the 38 × 46 cm format distinguish the version of the Moulin de la Galette kept at the Museum Langmatt.

Series

Van Gogh painted three views very close to the Radet mill

F226, F227 and F228 show the same set from Junot Avenue, with slight variations in figures, signs and light. This sheet corresponds to Baden's version.

Montmartre

The name Moulin de la Galette designates an entire place of leisure

The café-concert developed around the Debray family mills. The mill shown here is the Radet, while the Blute-Fin was a little further west.

Period

The painting belongs to Van Gogh's first Parisian autumn

Living with his brother Theo in Montmartre, the artist works directly in the neighborhood. His palette begins to lighten, but still retains many earthy browns and reds.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must preserve the silhouette of the Radet, the two large diagonal wings, the tricolor flag, the red cabaret, the painted signs, the street lamp and the exact distribution of passers-by.

  • The two black wings crossing the cream sky
  • The little red, white and blue flag at the top
  • The Moulin de la Galette brand under the roof
  • The yellow and white words on the red facade
  • The street lamp and the group of passers-by in the foreground
