Portrait of Gauguin, F546Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

Seen from behind and in profile, Paul Gauguin wears a large red beret which dominates almost his entire head; this small study on jute captures less an official pose than a presence observed in the Arles workshop.

Look at the work

Gauguin seen over the shoulder

The model turns her face to the right. The forehead, nose and beard are cut into a dark profile, while the red beret forms a large triangular mass above the ear.

The green coat occupies the lower half and almost merges with the yellow-green background. A small blue and yellow rectangle at the top left, as well as an orange shape on the right, are enough to suggest the interior.

The work is today cataloged by the Van Gogh Museum as Portrait of Gauguin, painted around December 1, 1888 during the nine weeks when the two artists shared the Yellow House. The identification is based in particular on the beret known from photographs by Gauguin.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The small format of 37 × 33 cm, the oil applied to jute and the inventory s0257V1962 correspond to F546, work without number in the Hulsker catalog.

01

A portrait without frontality

Van Gogh refuses the direct gaze: the shoulder and the back of the neck act as a screen, as if Gauguin had been seized in the middle of an activity.

02

The beret as a signal

The red shape immediately concentrates attention and allows you to identify the silhouette despite the very basic shape of the face.

03

A rough material

The frame of the jute remains visible under the thick, matte touches. This surface reinforces the rapid and experimental nature of the study.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

This portrait is a rare document on the cohabitation of Van Gogh and Gauguin in Arles at the end of 1888.

Support

Burlap

The coarse support is linked to the materials used by the two painters during their joint stay and gives the painting its very visible texture.

Identification

Gauguin's red beret

The shape of the headgear resembles that worn by Gauguin in photographs; the museum nevertheless preserves the complex history of the attribution of the canvas.

Moment

Before the December breakup

Dating around December 1 places the study a few weeks before Gauguin's departure and Van Gogh's crisis of December 23.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must retain the roughness of the jute, the profile almost sculpted by shadow and the delicate balance between the red of the beret and the greens of the coat.

  • The big red beret
  • The dark profile turned right
  • Ear surrounded by blue gray
  • The very thick green coat
  • The small blue and yellow rectangle at the bottom
