The Mulberry TreeReproduction of oil painting on canvas

A yellow mulberry tree seems to spring from a stony embankment under an intense blue sky. The dark trunk divides into nerve branches which bear a crown of thick leaves, almost sculpted in color.

Look at the work

A yellow tree ablaze in front of the blue sky

The mulberry tree occupies almost the entire width and stands out seamlessly against the blue. Its brown and black branches wind to the upper edge, causing yellow, orange and green leaves to move in opposite movements.

The light embankment rises diagonally behind the trunk. Van Gogh covers it with bluish whites, yellows, greens and grays; a purple shadow at the foot of the tree gives weight to this luminous mass.

The tree is treated as a living presence: the trunk resists, the crown unfolds and each color contrast amplifies its energy.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The Norton Simon Museum preserves Le Mûrier under the inventory M.1976.09.P. The work measures 54 × 65 cm and bears the references F637/JH1796.

01

A crown that extends beyond its own silhouette

The leaves do not form a regular mass. They break off in loops and points, sometimes separated by thin passages of blue sky.

02

A material almost in relief

The museum highlights the thickness of the chrome yellow. Van Gogh even modeled certain areas with the brush handle, giving the foliage a bas-relief appearance.

03

Complementaries brought to their maximum

The orange-yellow of the tree faces the intense blue of the sky; the purple shadow in turn reinforces the yellows of the terrain. The balance depends on these frank oppositions.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

Le Mûrier was painted in October 1889 in Saint-Rémy. This oil on canvas measuring 54 × 65 cm is cataloged F637/JH1796.

Letter

"A completely yellow mulberry tree"

On October 5, 1889, Van Gogh described to Theo an entirely yellow mulberry tree standing out against the blue of the sky. This opposition constitutes the central principle of the canvas.

Matter

Yellow modeled with the handle

The Norton Simon Museum audio guide explains that the painter applied the yellow in a thick layer, then worked on certain parts with the handle of his brush.

Provenance

Camille Pissarro among the first owners

Pissarro saw the painting in Theo van Gogh's Parisian gallery and exchanged it for one of his own works. The Norton Simon Museum received it as a donation in 1976.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must preserve the thickness of the yellow leaves, the dark branches visible between them, the pure blue sky, the striated embankment and the purple shadow at the foot of the trunk.

  • The chrome and orange yellows of the crown
  • The black-brown branches in the center of the foliage
  • The direct contrast with the blue of the sky
  • The clear and eventful material of the embankment
