Claude Monet · 1916 -1919 · Marmottan Monet Museum 5098 · W1864
A blue-green surface occupies the entire canvas, crossed by long purple flows and lighter reflections. Oval leaves float in small groups, especially around the center. Among them, a few red, yellow and pink flowers burst like very short signs. Without horizon or bank, Monet makes the pond a vertical depth that the water lilies interrupt and bring back to the surface.

Look at the work
The leaves are not drawn one by one. Some are reduced to a purple ellipse, others superimpose green, blue, pink and brown. They remain more numerous in the middle zone and allow large passages of water to breathe around them. The flowers, even smaller, concentrate the warm color without dominating the whole.
Behind these horizontal shapes, the reflections descend in blue, green and purple gestures. Their vertical direction evokes the branches of the willow, but they do not describe any complete tree. Shorter touches blur these columns and restore water mobility. The depth then seems to move according to the distance of the gaze.
Water lilies do not decorate the surface: they give scale and rhythm to a space of water that has become almost limitless.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
Their horizontality opposes long vertical reflections. Respecting their intervals and their slight rotations is essential to keep the composition breathing.
Red, yellow and pink appear in small touches in the middle of blues and greens. Enlarging or saturating them too much would shift the entire balance of the painting.
No horizon measures space. Superpositions of reflections, leaves and colored layers alone create the feeling of depth.
Reference image
The single reference image measures 2,200 × 1,844 px. It corresponds to canvas 5098 from the Marmottan Monet Museum and has been converted into a real WebP without artificial enlargement.
Leaves and flowers concentrate around a flexible axis, but the edges remain freer. This difference in density prevents the composition from becoming a uniform seedling.
Cold areas contain many temperatures: turquoise, blue gray, olive green and purple. Their alternation gives the pool its vibration.
The Marmottan Museum distinguishes this accomplished work from late studies left with large reserves of canvas. Here, the material covers the field and constructs an autonomous composition.
Documented benchmarks
These landmarks concern the Water Lilies of the Marmottan Monet Museum, inventory 5098 and Wildenstein 1864.
This oil on canvas, painted between 1916 and 1919, measures 130 × 152 cm. It bears at the bottom right the stamp of the "Claude Monet" estate.
Michel Monet, son of the painter, bequeathed the work to the Marmottan Museum in 1966 with the exceptional ensemble preserved in the Giverny workshop.
The museum notice describes this painting as a completed work, intended for sale. It is distinguished from incomplete studies by the continuous coverage of the surface and by the precise balance of leaves and flowers.
