A long yellow and green flow crosses the pool between blue, purple and brown reflections. Water lilies accumulate especially in the lower part, where a few pink flowers illuminate the dark leaves. In this vertical format from 1907, Monet lowers the light throughout the canvas as if the water were becoming an atmospheric depth.
Look at the work
The light area starts from the top, slightly to the left of the center, then widens as it descends. The edges remain darker and give this light a sinuous movement. The leaves in the foreground interrupt the reflection in several stages, reaffirming the surface of the water.
Warm tones are not isolated: yellow mixes with green, pink and small traces of blue. In the dark parts, purples and browns are crossed with turquoise. The signature and date appear at the bottom right, integrated into the colored material.
W1706 associates descending light with horizontal leaves: the whole mystery comes from their crossing.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
W1706 belongs to the group of fifteen vertical canvases listed by Wildenstein from 1703 to 1717. This format allows Monet to stretch the reflections and transform a piece of pool into an almost monumental field of color.
The painting appears in the exhibition "Les Nymphéas, series of water landscapes" organized in Paris by the Durand-Ruel gallery in 1909. It is presented there among the works which consecrate Monet's new framing without a bank.
Long kept at the Kawamura Memorial DIC Museum of Art in Japan, the work was sold at Christie's in New York on May 12, 2025, lot 22A. It now belongs to a private collection.
Reference image
Only one reference image is used: the full view documented by Christie's, converted into a true WebP of 2,530 × 3,200 px, without artificial enlargement.
The light gap connects the top and bottom without forming a straight band. The dark lateral masses and the leaves of the foreground divide it into several depths.
The bright area retains cool shades; shadows contain warm accents. The small pink flowers serve as a transition between these two families.
Vertical streaks must remain melted and irregular. The leaves, more opaque, are placed in lateral touches which mark the surface without creating mechanical contours.
Documented benchmarks
Christie's sales notice documents the work, its journey and its classification under the number Wildenstein 1706.
This oil on canvas from 1907 measures 92 × 73.6 cm. It is signed and dated "Claude Monet 1907" at the bottom right.
After belonging to the Kawamura Memorial DIC Museum of Art, the painting was sold at Christie's in New York on May 12, 2025. Its current private location is not public.
The painting is presented in the major exhibition of Monet's water landscapes, under number 36. This event introduces the public to a whole where the pond becomes the only subject.
