A blue mirror of water where clouds seem to pass under the flowers

Monet divides the canvas into three flexible zones: a very dark reflected edge at the top, a large sky opening in the center and a denser blue foreground. The leaves aligned near the upper edge recede, while the groups spaced further apart at the bottom appear close to the viewer.

The pink and white touches of the flowers are never decorative. They punctuate the path of the gaze and measure the distance. Around them, blue is tinged with mauve, turquoise and green, so that the water seems flat, deep and full of light.

In W1691, depth is born without a visible shore: the reflected sky and the water lilies are enough to build the entire landscape.

The Yokohama Museum of Art file documents this 1906 oil on canvas, measuring 81 × 92 cm, as property of Yoshino Gypsum and deposited in the Yamagata Museum of Art. The catalog raisonné classifies it under number 1691.

The basin becomes the entire field

Framing eliminates the bridge and the banks. Monet superimposes the reflections of trees, clouds and sky on the material presence of floating leaves, creating a voluntary ambiguity between surface and depth.

Cold colors awakened by flowers

Blue dominates, but it constantly varies towards purple, green and gray. The small reds, pinks, yellows and whites form rare accents; their exact position is essential for reproductive balance.

The central light is cold but never uniform. Cloud and flower roses respond to each other; greens are reserved for leaves and some reflections.

Melted passages around clean touches

The reflections are worked with friction and soft touches. Water lilies require shorter, thicker markings in order to remain on the surface of the water.
