A large gap of cream light crosses the Giverny basin. Around it, blue-green masses reflect the trees, while several groups of pink and white water lilies float at different depths. Painted in 1905, this version marks the moment when Monet removes almost every landmark to make the water a complete landscape.
Look at the work
Water lilies are divided into three groups: a distant strip under the upper edge, scattered leaves in the middle and a closer group in the lower part. Their reduction in scale suggests depth, even if no shoreline directs the eye.
The large light reflection is never uniform. It mixes warm white, pale pink, blue gray and green touches. Darker reflections frame it with vertical gestures, while the leaves are placed in thicker side touches.
W1671 transforms the pool into an autonomous space: the sky, trees and flowers only exist in the moving mirror of the water.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
Monet eliminates the bridge, the banks and the horizon line. The viewer must reconstruct the garden from reflections and floating leaves alone, a construction that brings the canvas closer to the abstract research of the 20th century.
The signature "Claude Monet 1905" appears at the bottom right. The painting entered the Museum of Fine Arts Boston in 1939 thanks to a donation from Edward Jackson Holmes and bears inventory 39,804.
This painting belongs to the group that Monet developed between 1903 and 1908. In 1909, Durand-Ruel presented forty-eight water landscapes, establishing this new way of painting the Giverny basin.

Only one reference image is used: the view of W1671 preserved as a real WebP of 2,000 × 1,654 px, without artificial enlargement.
The light center widens downward and separates lateral reflections. Its outline must remain flexible: it is a variation of light on the water, not a cut-out shape.
Greens and blues build the pond; roses appear in flowers and in the reflection of the sky. The central cream brings the main breathing of the composition.
Water lilies assert the surface with their elongated touches. On the contrary, vertical trails suggest the depth of the reflected trees. Their crossing creates all the spatial ambiguity of the painting.
Documented benchmarks
The Museum of Fine Arts Boston identifies this version under inventory 39.804 and Wildenstein number 1671.
This oil on canvas from 1905 measures 89.5 × 100.3 cm. It is signed and dated lower right and belongs to Monet's first major waterscape campaign.
The painting was donated to the museum in 1939 by Edward Jackson Holmes. It is kept in one of Monet's most important collections outside France.
Monet directly paints the surface of the pond in his garden. The flowers, the reflections of the sky and those of the trees are enough to build the landscape, without horizon or architecture.
