Trois rendus pour une même œuvre

Claude Monet · circa 1906 · Ohara Museum of Art · W1689

Water lilies W1689hand painted reproduction

In this very clear version, large discs of leaves occupy the left half while mauve-blue water remains almost bare on the right. A few pink and yellow flowers are enough to liven up the pool. The painting, kept at the Ohara Museum of Art in Kurashiki, is listed as Wildenstein 1689.

Look at the work

An asymmetrical composition held by vacuum

Plant mass descends from the upper left corner to the lower center. On the right, thin vertical reflections and a few isolated leaves maintain balance. This asymmetry gives the impression that the pool continues beyond the frame.

The olive greens of the leaves are surrounded by darker lines. Around them, the water changes from pale blue to lilac and pink. The rubbed areas let the colors breathe, while the flowers receive thicker touches.

W1689 makes emptiness a color: the blue-mauve expanse matters as much as the water lilies themselves.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

An iconic work by Ohara

The museum's documentation dates the painting to around 1906 and gives a format of 73 × 92.5 cm. It belongs to the Western masterpieces gathered at Kurashiki.

02

A pioneering museum in Japan

Opened in 1930, the Ohara Museum of Art is Japan's first private museum primarily devoted to Western art. This painting by Monet has become one of his most recognized images.

03

The shore and the horizon have disappeared

Monet shows neither the bridge nor the edge of the pool. Changes in leaf scale, reflections and water intervals are enough to build depth.

Read this specific version

Only one image is used: the full view of W1689, converted to a true WebP of 3000 × 2345 px, without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

A diagonal of leaves

Groups must maintain their irregular progression from the top left. The distances between the discs are as important as their outline.

Color02

Milky blue, lilac, olive green and pink

Softness depends on fine transitions. The leaves remain firmer and warmer than water, whose cold tones overlap without becoming uniform.

Matter03

Rubbing and impasto

Water requires wide and light passages; the flowers and the edges of the leaves bear a denser material. This contrast makes the surface come alive.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The Ohara Museum of Art documents this 73 × 92.5 cm canvas, corresponding to Wildenstein number 1689.

Identification01

Water Lilies, Wildenstein 1689

This oil on horizontal canvas is dated around 1906. Its framing and arrangement of the leaves allow it to be distinguished from dozens of other water landscapes from the same period.

Collection02

Ohara Museum of Art, Kurashiki

The work is kept in the institution founded by Magosaburo Ohara to present to the Japanese public a major collection of Western art.

Pattern03

The pool created by Monet in Giverny

The painter observes a garden that he himself designed, but transforms this real place into an autonomous pictorial space made of water, flowers and reflections.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • Ohara's exact version, Wildenstein 1689
  • The original horizontal format of 73 × 92.5 cm
  • The diagonal of olive green leaves on mauve blue water
  • Pink and yellow flowers maintained as one-off accents
