In this vertical canvas from 1907, the Giverny basin is framed without a bank and without a horizon. Round leaves and a few pink flowers mainly occupy the upper half, then become spaced out as the gaze descends towards darker water. The blue, purple and green reflections transform the actual depth of the pool into a moving surface where the shapes appear and then dissolve.

Water lilies disperse from top to bottom and gradually let reflections invade the vertical format

The upper area brings together the main flowers, small pink and white touches placed in the middle of green or purple leaves. The contours remain irregular: some leaves are clearly perceptible, others blend into the water and only remain through a difference in temperature.

In the lower half, floating patterns become rarer. Vertical blue-purple gestures suggest reflected trees and sky, while horizontal markings recall the surface of the water. This alternation creates depth without traditional perspective.

The rarer the leaves become, the more difficult the water becomes to locate: reflection, depth and surface occupy the same painted space.

A format designed for top-down reading

The height of 100 cm dominates the width of 81 cm. The gaze passes from the groups of flowers at the top to the more open reflections at the bottom, a movement which would disappear in a horizontal cropping.

A deliberately unequal density

Monet does not distribute water lilies decoratively. The leaves are concentrated in islets, with wide intervals of water, which gives each flower a precise function in the general rhythm.

The reflection as colorful depth

Blues and purples do not form a uniform background. They receive greens, browns and grays which correspond to plants and off-camera light, then mix with floating leaves.
