Two meters wide, the pond completely fills the field. Olive green and golden brown leaves cluster in the center, surrounded by white, pink and red flowers. Around them, the water changes from deep green to blue, purple and ocher. No sky or bank closes the image: the reflections of willows plunge vertically into a surface that the water lilies constantly bring back towards us.

A double square of water where water lilies float in front of reflections of green, blue and golden willows

The main group stretches from one half to the other without forming a regular band. The leaf discs change size, color and inclination; some are almost round, others dissolve in water. The flowers serve as bright accents. The whites blend into the light reflections, while the pinks and reds focus the eye in the middle of the composition.

The long vertical gestures evoke willow branches and off-camera vegetation. They are crossed by shorter touches, horizontal or oblique, which restore the body of water. The bottom remains darker and bluer, the top warmer and golden. This variation gives a depth without horizon and transforms the pool into an almost abstract space.

Leaves indicate surface; reflections open it deeply. Monet keeps both readings active in the same moment.

The groups of leaves are neither centered nor mechanically repeated. Their intervals, their overlaps and the size of the flowers give the panorama its rhythm.

Reflections that change temperature

Moss green, cool blue, purple, yellow and brown coexist in the reflected branches. Keeping these passages avoids reducing the pond to a uniform green cast.

This oil on canvas measures 100.3 × 200.5 cm. It has belonged to the Nantes Museum of Arts since the donation from the Society of Friends of the Museum in 1938.

A complex date02

An inscription repeated from 1922 to 1917

The Nantes scientific file explains that Monet signed the painting for the museum in 1922, then transformed this date in 1917. The double square format not being available before April 1918, the dating is today presented with caution.

A purchase supported by friends of the museum03

A modern work that entered Nantes in 1938

The Society of Friends of the Museum of Fine Arts of Nantes offered painting to the institution in 1938. It constitutes one of Monet's large late formats preserved in a French public collection.
