Water lilies with pink and purple accents float among turquoise, green and yellow reflections. In the foreground, long grass rises in the composition and blurs the border between the bank and the mirror of the water. This 1907 version pushes the freedom of the touch very far: the pond remains identifiable, but each color also lives like an autonomous trace.
Look at the work
The left part is occupied by long, curved stems, while the water lily leaves are concentrated mainly in the center and right. Between these two groups, a yellow and pink zone opens the surface. The gaze thus circulates from the nearby bank towards the reflections without encountering a horizon.
The leaves are not described by regular ovals. They are formed by superimposed touches of green, blue, mauve and red. Vertical reflections pass through these horizontal marks and give the pool an unstable depth, constantly brought back to the surface of the canvas.
W1718 maintains the pool between two readings: a recognizable water garden and a free frame of gestures, colors and light.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
Monet looks directly at the water. The surrounding landscape appears only through its reflections, while the tall grass indicates the proximity of the shore. This removal of traditional landmarks brings the canvas closer to an abstract composition.
The painting bears the number 98 in the collection of the Albert-André museum in Bagnols-sur-Cèze and the number 1718 in the Wildenstein catalog. The work disappeared during a theft in 1972 and its location remains unknown.
Some passages allow a clear layer to breathe; others accumulate opaque marks. Reproduction must retain these differences in density, particularly between fine grasses, thicker leaves and fluid reflections.

Only one reference image is used: the photograph documenting W1718, preserved as a real WebP of 2,000 × 1,779 px, without artificial enlargement.
The stems start from the lower edge and rise towards the center. Their flexible movement opposes the horizontal bands of the water lilies and prevents the pool from becoming a simple decorative surface.
The palette is very extensive. Warm colors illuminate reflections without dominating blues and greens; purples serve as accents in the densest areas.
The reflections are swept with flexible gestures, the stems are drawn in more nervous lines and the leaves receive short touches. Their diversity builds the entire vibration of the painting.
Documented benchmarks
The historical inventory of the Albert-André museum and the catalog raisonné identify this version under numbers 98 and Wildenstein 1718.
This oil on canvas from 1907 measures 73 × 92 cm. It belongs to the group of water landscapes painted in Giverny and bears the number Wildenstein 1718.
Monet had supported the Bagnols-sur-Cèze museum formed by his friend Albert André. This work was registered there under number 98 before his death.
The painting disappeared from the Albert-André museum following a theft in 1972. The reproduction is based on documentary photography which retains the appearance of this precise version.
