The Needle and the Downstream Gate W1051hand painted reproduction

From the top of the Aval cliff, the Needle rises into a turquoise sea while the arch opens into the clear wall. The plunging viewpoint compresses the horizon and lets the rocks in the foreground invade the right side. Painted in 1886, this 65 × 81 cm oil on canvas is kept at the Shimane Art Museum and corresponds to Wildenstein 1051.

Look at the work

A look at the Needle and the Ark of Downstream

The isolated Needle occupies the left quarter. The large cliff starts from the right edge and goes down to the arch, whose blue-green opening reveals the sea. The nearby rocks form a steep, almost vertical surface.

Pink, cream, orange, blue and green build the chalk without uniform outline. The sea combines turquoise and milky blue in short touches. The very reduced sky almost blends in with the horizon.

The famous site is not seen from the beach: Monet chooses the height and transforms the cliff into colorful material that dominates the sea.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

An exceptionally high point of view

The coastline is observed from the summit. This position reveals the water surface around the Needle and the thickness of the arch.

02

Three distinct rock masses

The Needle, the pillar of the arch and the nearby cliff form three separate volumes, each shaped by a different colorful range.

03

A luminous sea without a wide horizon

The strip of sky is narrow; the impression of space comes mainly from the turquoise which circulates between the rocks.

Read this specific version

Composition01

Keep the Needle isolated on the left

Its purple-pink outline must remain clean against the sea without becoming a uniform silhouette.

Color02

Preserve the turquoise opening of the ark

This luminous passage distinguishes the central wall of the cliff from the foreground.

Matter03

Keep the colorful richness of the rock close

Reds, blues, greens and creams should remain visible in the thick material.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The Shimane Art Museum documents The Rock Needle and the Porte d'Aval, oil on canvas from 1886, 65 × 81 cm and catalog Wildenstein 1051.

Etretat01

A geology observed from several angles

Monet returns to the arches and the Needle from the beach, the sea and the heights. W1051 stands out for its plunging gaze.

Collection02

A major work on the theme of water in Shimane

The Japanese museum places this painting as a whole devoted to representations of water, alongside Courbet and Japanese prints.

Composition03

The nearby cliff occupies almost half of the surface

This colorful mass makes the height of the painter noticeable and prevents the view from becoming a simple coastal panorama.
