Claude Monet · Panorama of the city from the other bank of the Seine · Private collection
Argenteuil stretches into a low frieze between the Seine and the hills of the horizon. The Saint-Denys church punctuates the right bank, while a vast sky of gray, white and blue clouds dominates the city. Painted in 1872, this very elongated canvas separates sailboats, walkers and factories to make the urban landscape a calm and distant presence.

Look at the work
The Seine occupies almost the lower third and remains deliberately bare. A few small blue touches are enough to suggest its movement. On the other bank, houses, trees and church are juxtaposed into a narrow strip that the purple hillsides isolate from the sky.
Clouds cover more than half of the surface. Their broken whites stand out against bluish grays and mauves, with darker passages at the corners. This disproportion gives the panorama its feeling of space and places atmospheric light before topographical detail.
Monet does not bring Argenteuil closer: he lets the water establish a distance, then reduces the city to a series of colors under the changing immensity of the sky.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
The 83 cm width and 42 cm height require a panoramic reading. The gaze slowly travels along the bank, from the central red construction to the dark bell tower placed to the right.
Water line, bank, houses and hillsides overlap in strips. The trees, the red tower and especially the two points of the church introduce the rare verticals necessary for balance.
The Sotheby's notice highlights the absence of sailboats, wash houses and walkers often present in the views of the city. Monet favors an almost bucolic image here, despite the rapid industrialization of the site.
Reference image
The visual corresponds to Vue d'Argenteuil, oil on canvas from 1872, 42 × 83 cm, signed lower right and listed Wildenstein 235. The unique WebP measures 2,880 × 1,420 px, definition of the exact public file, without enlargement artificial.
The buildings are constructed in small cream, yellow, pink and blue masses. Detailing them excessively would break the desired distance from the other bank.
The densest whites are concentrated in the center, while the gray-purple edges show more of the canvas's weft. This variation maintains the depth of the clouds.
Its gray-blue bands are wide and not very contrasting. A few short lines in the foreground are enough to distinguish the surface of the Seine from the green bank.
Documented benchmarks
This oil on canvas from 1872 measures 42 × 83 cm. Preserved in private collections, it is identified by number 235 of the Wildenstein catalog raisonné.
The family arrived in December 1871 and stayed there for about six years. The city then became one of Monet's major laboratories for observing the Seine, leisure and the transformations of the suburbs.
The large body of water places the city at a distance. The hillsides of the Saint-Denis region in Pontoise close the horizon behind the houses and the church.
The painting was acquired from Monet by the Durand-Ruel gallery no later than 1891, then remained in the merchant's family collection for several decades.
