Meadows in Giverny W1202hand painted reproduction

A vast wet meadow, strewn with touches of green, pink and blue, leads to a few trees which barely emerge in the mist of Giverny. Painted in 1888, this oil on vertical canvas measuring 92.5 × 81.5 cm is kept at the Hermitage Museum under the number Оonds-7721 and corresponds to Wildenstein 1202.

Look at the work

The meadow occupies almost the entire eye before the trees emerge from the mist

The field rises from the lower edge to a very high line of trees. Two rounded crowns and several vertical poplars serve as landmarks, but their contours remain absorbed by the atmosphere.

Pale green, turquoise, yellow, pink and mauve are placed in small superimposed touches. The creamy sky and the bluish mist at the bottom reduce the contrasts; the landscape appears bathed in humid light rather than illuminated by a visible source.

The vertical format does not elevate a monument: it gives scale to ordinary terrain and makes the distance between grass and trees the real subject.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A horizon placed very high

The meadow occupies the majority of the canvas and imposes its rhythm of touches before any topographical reference. This proportion gives the viewer the feeling of being almost in the grass.

02

Individualized trees without hard drawing

Thin poplars and round crowns each have a silhouette, but the mist softens their limits. They organize depth without closing the field.

03

The meadows south of Giverny in 1888

During the summer, Monet returned to these terrains several times under different conditions. W1202 favors a pale atmosphere and an almost square, vertically oriented format.

Read this specific version

Only one exact image of W1202 is used. The real WebP measures 2,328 × 2,640 px and retains the native definition of the source, without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

Preserve the low general contrast

The work is based on the gentle transitions between field, trees and sky. Artificially reinforcing the shadows would make the mist disappear.

Color02

Keep pink and mauve touches in the grass

They prevent the greens from becoming uniform and circulate light from the sky into the foreground.

Matter03

Keep trees partially dissolved

Their silhouettes must remain legible but flexible. Trunks or crowns that are too sharp would cancel out the atmospheric depth.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The Hermitage Museum preserves Prés à Giverny, oil on canvas from 1888, 92.5 × 81.5 cm, inventory ʻonds-7721 and Wildenstein 1202.

Collection01

Hermitage Museum, inventory ʻilt-7721

The work comes from the former Sergei Shchukin collection, a major ensemble which introduced impressionism and modern French art to Russia.

Location02

The meadows located around Giverny

Established in the village since 1883, Monet first explored the fields, the Epte valley and the poplars before concentrating his work on the water garden.

Version03

The Wildenstein 1202 canvas

Its vertical format, its high horizon, its two round trees and its very fine poplars allow it to be distinguished from other meadows of 1888.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The Wildenstein 1202 version
  • The vertical format
  • The very extensive pastel meadow
  • Trees softened by mist
