Three dark fish and a head of garlic
The fish cross slightly. The longest follows a diagonal to the right, a second shows its massive head in the center and the third, shorter, advances towards the left edge.
The head of garlic stands out with its yellowish white and curved stem. Background and table share close ochres, but a discreet horizontal line indicates the angle of the piece.
This Parisian still life from spring 1887 measures 37 × 44.5 cm. It bears the references F283b and JH1230 and is kept at the Artizon Museum in Tokyo.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
The old French title was distorted by a literal translation: the English word "bloaters" here designates smoked herring, and not a "looping".
The fish structure the diagonal
Their elongated bodies lead the gaze from left to right. Overlaps and different orientations avoid too regular presentation.
The dark material remains colored
Brown, olive green, black and golden highlights describe dry skin. The thick touches make the edges and roughness visible.
Garlic acts as a counterpoint
Its round shape, light color and isolation oppose it to the three dark fish. It balances the composition without adding any decorative object.
