À propos de l’œuvre

Nature morte avec un bol en pierre et des poires, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · September 1885 · Nuenen

Still life with stone bowl and pears, F105Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

A heavy gray bowl contains several green and yellow pears, while other fruits are scattered across the dark table. Van Gogh constructs this small still life by oppositions of matter: matte skin of the fruits, mineral edge of the cup and almost black background.

Look at the work

Light pears emerge from a very deep green-brown space

The bowl is slightly offset to the left and seen from a little above. Its wide elliptical rim envelops the fruits, whose contours overlap without forming a regular pyramid.

An isolated pear occupies the foreground and brings the scene closer to the viewer. Other fruits extend to the right; their olive yellows and green reflections become the only bright areas of the painting.

Still life with a stone bowl and pears F105/JH926 is an oil on canvas of 33.5 × 43.5 cm painted in Nuenen in September 1885. It is kept at the Centraal Museum in Utrecht under number 21784.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The composition is compact, but the fruits outside the bowl create several directions. Van Gogh avoids smooth precision: the pears and the cut are shaped by visible, thick and sometimes angular touches.

01

The edge of the bowl organizes the whole group

Its gray-blue ellipse connects the pears without confusing them. The differences in value between the light stone, the dark interior and the fruits give the container its weight.

02

The pear in the foreground opens the composition

Placed under the bowl, it breaks the horizontal alignment and creates a distinct foreground. Its dark stem points towards the main group and brings the gaze back towards the center.

03

The fruits are colorful rather than drawn

Olive green, earth yellow, brown and a few reddish accents juxtapose on each skin. The contours remain irregular, which reinforces their material presence.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

F105/JH926, inventory 21784 and dimensions 33.5 × 43.5 cm distinguish this still life preserved in Utrecht.

Period

Van Gogh painted this painting in Nuenen in September 1885

After his major studies of peasant figures, he returned to still lifes to deepen the values, volumes and muted color accords.

Museum

The original belongs to the Centraal Museum in Utrecht

The table is recorded there under number 21784. This data allows us to distinguish it from other studies of pears and apples carried out by Van Gogh.

Palette

The yolks of the pears remain deliberately earthy

Van Gogh does not yet use the bright light of his French period. The fruits stand out with small variations of olive, ocher and green on a black-brown background.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must preserve the heaviness of the bowl, its elliptical rim, the superimposed pears, the isolated fruit in the foreground, the dark stems and the olive green to deep brown palette.

  • The wide gray-blue edge of the stone bowl
  • Pears tight inside the container
  • The pear isolated under the bowl in the foreground
  • The fruits arranged horizontally to the right
  • The olive green and ocher passages on the black brown background
