Nature morte aux cinq bouteilles, par Vincent van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh · November 1884 · Nuenen
Still life with five bottles, F56Reproduction of oil painting on canvas
Four stoneware jugs and a glass bottle are gathered in front of a clear window. One of the red containers lies in the foreground, which breaks the vertical row and gives the whole thing immediate depth.
Look at the work
A lying bottle transforms alignment into dynamic composition
On the left, the black bottle forms the first vertical. Three brown jugs then follow one another, their handles forming loops; the large red container lying across the entire lower half.
The light from the window changes from yellow green to ocher and reflects off the sandstone. The dark panel on the right tightens the space and makes the yellows applied to the table appear brighter.
Still life with five bottles F56/JH530 is a 46.5 × 56 cm oil on canvas painted in Nuenen in November 1884. The Belvedere in Vienna preserves it under inventory 7762.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
The canvas contrasts four standing volumes with a lying fifth. The handles, collars and reflections produce a rhythm without any additional accessories.
The lying bottle opens diagonally
Its collar points to the left while its red body widens to the right. It connects the rear objects to the lower edge.
The handles repeat the same curve
Three loops appear at different heights. Their repetition softens the rigid verticality of the collars.
The window functions as an internal source
Its greens and yellows illuminate the silhouettes from behind and create warmer reflections on the central jugs.
