Vincent van Gogh · September 1885 · Nuenen, Netherlands

Cauldron and jug, F51Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

Look at the work

Dented metal, matte stoneware and potatoes come in three different materials

The cauldron tilts towards the viewer and shows its dark interior. Its handle, edge and bumps receive yellow-green touches; on the contrary, the jug remains straight, compact and almost monochrome.

Potatoes form an irregular band in the foreground. Their small ocher accents create a transition between the brown fabric, the copper of the cauldron and the black-green background.

Cauldron and jug F51/JH925 is a 65.5 × 80.5 cm oil on canvas painted in Nuenen in September 1885. The Van Gogh Museum preserves it under inventory s0052V1962.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The light does not illuminate the entire scene: it selects the edge of the cauldron, the shoulder of the jug and a few potatoes. Van Gogh thus constructs the volumes with an extremely limited palette.

01

The cauldron is deliberately unbalanced

Its oval opening is inclined and its body appears to rest on the fabric. This position makes the interior, the metal edge and the dented wall visible.

02

The jug provides a stable vertical

Its short collar and round handle stand out from the bottom with faint green undertones. It acts as a calm counterweight to the large overturned container.

03

Potatoes bring still life closer to everyday life

They are neither aligned nor idealized. Their dispersion, eyes and irregular shapes add terrestrial matter to the surfaces of metal and sandstone.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

F51/JH925, inventory s0052V1962 and format of 65.5 × 80.5 cm identify this large still life from September 1885.

Letter

Van Gogh mentions his still lifes at the end of September

In his correspondence with Theo, he points out several studies including potatoes, which places the work in an intensive phase of the genre.

Technique

Another image is below the visible layer

The technical catalog of the Van Gogh Museum indicates an earlier composition under the current painting, testimony to the reuse of the canvas.

Materials

The subject puts the painting to the test

Reflective brass, matte sandstone, tuber skin and fabric absorb light in different ways that Van Gogh translates without vibrant colors.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must preserve the inclination of the cauldron, its yellow-green reflections, the right jug, the scattered potatoes, the brown fabric and the black-green background.

  • The Oval, Dark Cauldron Opening
  • The metallic edge highlighted with yellow-green
  • The round handle of the sandstone jug
  • The potatoes distributed in the foreground
  • The very smooth transition between objects and background
