À propos de l’œuvre
Nature morte avec un panier de pommes de terre, entouré de feuilles d'automne et de légumes, par Vincent van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh · September 1885 · Nuenen, Netherlands
Basket of potatoes, leaves and vegetables, F102Reproduction of oil painting on canvas
A basket of potatoes almost disappears under the autumn leaves, cabbages and roots. In this large still life, the light catches a few vegetables and brings out an abundant harvest from a black-brown background.
Look at the work
A bountiful harvest spread out in the shadows
The basket is in the center left, but its contours merge with the foliage. On the right, the veins of a large light cabbage unfold like a fan above several round vegetables.
In the foreground, carrots, onions, yellow leaves and potatoes form an irregular frieze. A bright area in the upper right opens up the space without revealing any real decor.
Basket of potatoes, leaves and vegetables F102/JH937 is an oil on canvas measuring 75 × 93 cm, painted in Nuenen in September 1885 and today listed in a private collection in Liège.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
Van Gogh constructs less a botanical inventory than a network of materials and directions. Linear roots, crumpled leaves and round volumes become entangled in an autumnal range.
The basket remains deliberately buried
Its shape is never isolated. The stems and leaves pass through its edges, so that the container and the harvest become a single organic mass.
The light cabbage stares
Its cream and gray-green leaves are the brightest accent. Their concentric design slows down the diagonal of the carrots and roots.
Autumn colors liven up the foreground
The yellows, reds and reds are placed in small touches in front of an almost black depth. This warm band gives weight to the lower part of the painting.
Documented benchmarks
Precisely identify the original work
The unusually large format, the references F102/JH937 and the full description of the subject distinguish this canvas from the small baskets of potatoes painted the same year.
A large still life of 75 × 93 cm
The breadth of the support allows Van Gogh to multiply vegetables, leaves and roots without reducing the pattern to a simple central basket.
A private collection in Liège
The catalog locates the work in Liège, Belgium. It is therefore not associated with a public museum or an institutional inventory number.
September 1885 in Nuenen
The painting belongs to the group of autumnal still lifes in which Van Gogh studies dark values before leaving for Antwerp.
