À propos de l’œuvre

Nature morte avec panier de pommes, viande et petits pains, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · Summer 1886 · Paris

Still life in basket of apples, meat and breads, F219Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

A basket of red apples, leafy vegetables, a piece of meat and two rolls are lined up on a dark table. The almost black background erases the surrounding space and lets the yellows, reds and greens of the provisions stand out like a generous frieze.

Look at the work

An ordinary meal becomes a series of colorful masses

The basket occupies the left and brings together several apples whose contours overlap. An isolated apple, placed in front, advances towards the viewer and opens the progression which then passes through the leaves, meat and breads.

On the right, the handle of a vegetable and the nearest bread extend an ascending then descending diagonal. The black void above the food gives this low line special strength and keeps all the attention on the table.

Still Life in the Basket of Apples, Meat and Bread F219/JH1117 is a 46 × 55 cm oil on canvas painted in Paris during the summer of 1886. It belongs to the collections of the Kroeller-Müller Museum.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

Despite its Parisian date, this still life retains a deep range. Van Gogh animates the objects with colorful contours and thick touches which oppose the silent background.

01

The basket constitutes the red and circular focus of the composition

Its ocher strands surround the apples like rings. The reds are enhanced with yellow and green, which separates the fruits without resorting to a smooth pattern.

02

Foliage serves as a hinge between foods

A mass of dark greens connects the basket to the meat. Its fine and nervous touches contrast with the wider surfaces of the breads and ham.

03

The table edge stabilizes the long diagonal of the provisions

A horizontal band crosses the bottom of the canvas. It visually retains objects whose silhouettes follow one another on a slope up to the bread in the foreground.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

F219/JH1117, the dating from summer 1886 and the format of 46 × 55 cm distinguish this composition from the numerous baskets of apples painted by Van Gogh.

Paris

The painting belongs to the first Parisian research of 1886

Van Gogh then painted numerous still lifes to directly experiment with color ratios. Here, hot foods still emerge from a very dark environment.

Subject

The title specifically brings together apples, meat and bread

The basket is just one part of a larger assortment. The open piece of meat, vegetables and two elongated loaves make this version instantly recognizable.

Catalog

References F219 and JH1117 establish the identity of the work

They avoid confusion with F378 and F379, two later baskets of apples, or with the baskets and apples painted in Nuenen in 1885.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must retain the black green background, the braided basket, the reds of the apples, the central foliage, the pink cut of the meat and the oblique direction of the two loaves.

  • Red apples squeezed into the basket on the left
  • The apple isolated at the edge of the table
  • Green foliage that connects groups
  • The light, red cut of the piece of meat
  • The two elongated loaves which lead to the right
