À propos de l’œuvre
Nature morte avec un panier de pommes et deux citrouilles, par Vincent van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh · September 1885 · Nuenen
Still life with apples and pumpkins, F106Reproduction of oil painting on canvas
A basket is overflowing with large kitchen apples and pumpkins, surrounded by smaller fruits on an almost black table. The light from the top left hits a yellow squash and a few red apples, letting the rest of the harvest gradually emerge from the shade.
Look at the work
A dark harvest becomes an exercise in color modeling
The basket occupies the rear center and forms an arched mass. In front of it, the apples and small squash run to the lower edge; on the left, two larger pumpkins balance the accumulation.
The light source is not diffuse. It touches certain fruits, marks the strands of the basket and casts a shadow which hollows out the space. However, unlit objects remain distinct thanks to variations of green, brown and red.
Still life with apples and pumpkins F106/JH936 is an oil on canvas of 59 × 84.5 cm painted in Nuenen in September 1885. It belongs to the Kroeller-Müller Museum under number KM 102.578.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
Van Gogh paints this still life opaquely, wet on wet, with a sometimes very thick material. The colors shape each fruit without resorting to a regular contour design.
The upper left light builds all the depth
Yellow squash receives the main shine; fruits further away sink into the dark. The shadow cast under the basket clearly separates the planes.
The braiding of the basket is redone with a brush
Short, curved lines follow the wicker strands. They describe both the structure of the container and the light passages between the fruits.
Impasto differentiates smooth apples and warty squash
Apples are shaped by more continuous curves. Pumpkins receive thick, angular, clear touches that make their bumps felt.
Documented benchmarks
Precisely identify the original work
F106/JH936, the large format of 59 × 84.5 cm and the number KM 102.578 identify this still life signed by the Nuenen series.
The painting belongs to a group of seven still lifes
Van Gogh then painted baskets of apples, potatoes and other fruits to learn how to shape volumes with different colors.
The reds and light tones are applied secondly
The museum reveals a thick and saturated pictorial layer, worked wet on wet. Late accents reinforce the lit fruits.
Van Gogh signs the work lower left
He seems to have been particularly satisfied with this work, which was nevertheless difficult to sell, which he wrote to Theo that it was extremely useful to him.
