Look at the work

A vegetable harvest lit flush with the table

The basket occupies the left half and can be read thanks to its long horizontal sticks. On the right, the tops and leaves extend the arrangement into a much darker area.

Two large orange carrots cross the center diagonally. In front of them, the white roots of the leeks and several small red bulbs capture the clearest accents of light.

Still life in the vegetable basket F212a/JH929 is an oil on canvas measuring 35.5 × 45 cm, painted in Nuenen in September 1885. The work is today listed as a private collection.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

Van Gogh transforms a domestic motif into a study of materials: braided wood, crumpled leaves, fibrous roots and smooth skins. The dark range makes reds and whites particularly intense.

01

The carrots establish the main diagonal

Their warm orange crosses the deep greens and directs the basket's gaze towards the foreground. They prevent the composition from remaining purely horizontal.

02

The basket merges with its contents

Its green-brown fibers and vegetable stems use similar touches. The objects thus seem to form a single organic cluster.

03

White roots become accents

A few leeks and turnips receive a cream light. These small light areas give relief to the whole without illuminating the background.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The numbers F212a/JH929, the format and the dating of September 1885 make it possible to identify this version among the numerous still lifes of vegetables painted in Nuenen.

Context

Products from the presbytery garden

Van Gogh then arranges the vegetables and fruits grown behind his parents' house. He uses them for color, weight and texture exercises.

Collection

A work passed into a private collection

The catalogs notably associated it with the Anneliese Brand collection, then with a private Swiss collection. It is not kept in a public museum.

Catalog

F212a and JH929

These historical references remain essential because the generic title can easily be confused with F103, another still life with vegetables and fruits.

  • The horizontal sticks of the basket
  • The two orange carrots in the center
  • The white roots in the foreground
  • The small red bulbs on the right
  • Dark foliage closing background
