Nature morte avec pot de gingembre et oignons, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · September 1885 · Nuenen, Netherlands

A large pot of green sandstone stands behind three onions placed on a table. The scene is very dark, but the yellow, brown and orange peels capture the light and give these ordinary objects a monumental presence.

Look at the work

A massive pot and three onions in brown chiaroscuro

The pot occupies the center left and rises almost to the upper edge. Its thick collar, rounded shoulder and gray-green highlights barely stand out from the bottom.

A large open onion rests on the left, while two smaller bulbs group together on the right. Dry peels form tips and curls that liven up the table line.

Still life with ginger pot and onions F104a/JH924 is an oil on canvas of 34.5 × 49.5 cm, painted in Nuenen in September 1885. Given by Herman Levy in 1984, it belongs to the McMaster Museum of Art in Hamilton.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

Van Gogh contrasts the stability of the vertical pot with the irregularity of the onions. The light remains concentrated near the table, so that shapes, reflections and peels gradually emerge from the darkness.

01

The pot acts as an architectural mass

Its simple volume organizes the entire composition. Greens, grays and browns shape the ceramic without regular outline.

02

The peels capture the light

The large onion on the left receives the brightest yolks. The fragments of skin surrounding it prolong its movement on the table.

03

The background and the objects remain linked

The shadows of the pot blend into the black-brown of the background. Only the collar, the shoulder and a few reflections allow us to reconstruct its volume.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

References F104a/JH924, the September 1885 dating and the McMaster Museum collection distinguish this painting from other still lifes in a ginger pot.

Period

A still life painted in Nuenen

The work precedes Van Gogh's departure for Antwerp. Its dark and earthy range still fully belongs to the research of the Brabant period.

Subject

Everyday objects observed without decoration

The pot and onions are placed very close to the viewer, without narrative accessories. Their shape, weight and texture constitute the real subject.

Collection

A donation from Herman Levy in 1984

The McMaster Museum of Art preserves the painting in the legacy of collector Herman Levy, an important ensemble donated to the university.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Reproduction must retain the large dark green pot, its luminous neck, the large open onion, the two bulbs on the right, the dry peels and the very fine transitions of the black-brown background.

  • The thick neck of the sandstone pot
  • Green-gray reflections on the ceramic
  • The big yellow onion on the left
  • Curved peels on the table
  • The almost black brown chiaroscuro
