À propos de l’œuvre

Nature morte aux trois nids d'oiseaux, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · October 1885 · Nuenen, Netherlands

Still Life with Three Bird Nests, F110Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

Three nests barely stand out from a black-brown background, as if discovered in the shadow of undergrowth. Twigs, moss and straw are indicated by ocher lines which give each construction a different texture.

Look at the work

Three fragile architectures emerge from the darkness

The most legible nest occupies the left, open towards the viewer and surrounded by branches. A second volume stands in the center, while the third forms a large dark crown in the lower right corner.

The table or floor is only lit by an ocher strip in the foreground. Above, objects blend into deep black greens and browns, so little yellow touches become essential to reading them.

Painted in Nuenen in October 1885, this Still Life with Three Bird's Nests F110/JH941 is an oil on canvas measuring 42.4 × 57 cm. It is kept at the Kunstmuseum Den Haag under number 0332818, on long-term loan from Wibbina-Stichting.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

Van Gogh deliberately chose a very dark scale in order to study the differences in material. The nests are not drawn by a uniform outline: they are constructed by the accumulation of light twigs on almost black masses.

01

Each nest has its own orientation

The one on the left is seen almost from the front, the one in the center seems more erect and the one on the right spreads out in a circle. This variety animates a very tight composition.

02

Straws work like accents

Yellow, red and gray lines describe the fibers without naturalistic attention to detail. Their irregular direction restores the braiding and fragility of the materials.

03

The light remains at the edge of the board

The ocher band in the foreground acts as a threshold. It prevents nests from disappearing entirely into the shadows and gives depth to this indeterminate space.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The Kunstmuseum Den Haag instructions, inventory 0332818 and references F110/JH941 make it possible to distinguish this version from other still lifes at nests produced at the same time.

Series

Several nest studies in 1885

In the fall of 1885, Van Gogh collected abandoned nests and painted several arrangements. The versions differ in the number of nests, their format and their place of conservation.

Collection

A loan from Wibbina-Stichting

The painting is presented at the Kunstmuseum Den Haag as part of a long-term loan from the Wibbina Foundation, an indication given in the official notice.

Identification

F110 and JH941

These two numbers precisely designate the Hague painting. They avoid any confusion with F108 and F112, two other compositions of three nests at the Kroeller-Müller Museum.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must preserve the three distinct orientations, the ocher twigs, the almost black greens, the band of light in the foreground and the very subtle transitions between the objects and the background.

  • The open and detailed nest on the left
  • The vertical mass of the central nest
  • The large dark crown at the bottom right
  • The ocher lines that suggest the twigs
  • The light strip in the foreground
