Trois rendus pour une même œuvre

Vincent van Gogh · November 1884 · Nuenen

Still life with pottery and two bottles, F57Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

Two bottles rise behind three ceramic containers: a decorated pot placed in a large terrine, a yellow jug and a white bowl. Greens, ochres and blacks give these ordinary objects an almost monumental presence.

Look at the work

Containers fit together and respond to each other in two rows

On the left, the small green pot is placed inside a large ocher terrine. On the right, the white bowl advances in the foreground; between them, the black bottle and the yellow jug occupy the back row.

The black green background remains very active, covered with visible brushstrokes. The white reflections on the glass, the yellow handle and the light outline of the bowl cut out the objects without isolating them from this dark material.

Still life with pottery and two bottles F57/JH539 is a 40 × 56.5 cm oil on canvas painted in Nuenen in November 1884. The Norton Simon Museum preserves it under inventory F.1972.44.P.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

Van Gogh constructs the whole thing with interlocking shapes and angular contours. The museum brings this simplification closer to the painter's interest in Japanese prints.

01

The pot placed in the terrine creates a double shape

Their two handles and two openings overlap. This complex structure balances the much simpler white bowl on the right.

02

Both bottles do not have the same weight

The black glass is narrow and shiny; the yellow jug is matte, wide and has a handle. Their contrast animates the background.

03

The white bowl opens a breath

Its gray green interior receives several reflections. Placed in front of the containers, it prevents the composition from becoming a single dark mass.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The Norton Simon Museum notice confirms November 1884, the format of 40 × 56.5 cm, the inventory F.1972.44.P and the references F57/JH539.

Atelier

A still life painted during Nuenen's classes

The museum recalls that Van Gogh then gave lessons to a few students and sometimes painted compositions of objects alongside them.

Shapes

Deliberately simplified contours

The pots and bottles are described by firm lines and irregular flat areas. This simplification reinforces their weight rather than seeking a perfect illusion.

Collection

A work that entered the foundation in 1972

The painting was acquired by the Norton Simon Foundation in September 1972 and has since been listed in inventory F.1972.44.P.
