Nature morte aux sabots, par Vincent van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh · End of November - mid-December 1881 · The Hague, Netherlands
Still life with hooves, F63Reproduction of oil painting on canvas
A pot of red earth, a green bottle and a pair of clogs occupy a dark table. The Kroeller-Müller Museum presents this study executed by Anton Mauve as the very first painting by Van Gogh.
Look at the work
The first objects painted by Van Gogh
The round, orange pot dominates the center. Behind it, the bottle rises on the left while the two hooves fit together on the right, one showing its black interior.
A piece of yellow fabric appears in the foreground. Van Gogh incises the joints of the boards into the paint with a blunt object, probably the brush handle.
Still life with clogs F63/JH920 is an oil on canvas mounted on a panel of 39 × 41.5 cm produced in The Hague between the end of November and mid-December 1881. It is kept under the number KM 111.332.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
Mauve composes this exercise to confront Van Gogh with glass, terracotta, wood, fabric and leather. The museum sees this as the true beginning of his career as a painter.
The pot gives the main volume
Its orange-red belly is shaped by broad shadows. The lid and edge create ellipses essential for depth.
Hooves fit together
Their arrangement shows both the exterior silhouettes and the black cavity of one of them, a complex exercise in form.
The table is literally drawn
The lines of the boards were scratched in the wet paint. This very concrete gesture remains visible in the original.
Documented benchmarks
Precisely identify the original work
The official notice gives 39 × 41.5 cm, an oil on canvas mounted on a panel and the inventory KM 111.332. Catalog references are F63/JH920.
The first painting according to the museum
Anton Mauve places Van Gogh in front of this still life during his lessons in The Hague. The result encouraged him to continue oil painting.
Glass, earth, wood and fabric
Each object imposes a different response: matte reflection of the bottle, roundness of the pot, hollows of the hooves and folds of the cloth.
