Potato basket, F100Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

Look at the work

The basket organizes an accumulation of round shapes in very restrained light

The potatoes in the basket climb into a pyramid, but those in the table break this order. Their dispersion gives the impression that the harvest has just been poured and brings the motif closer to the viewer.

The black green background absorbs the upper contours. Van Gogh reserves the lightest touches for the eyes of the tubers, the edges of the wicker and a few faces facing the light.

Basket of potatoes F100/JH931 is an oil on canvas of 45 × 60.5 cm painted in Nuenen in September 1885. The Van Gogh Museum preserves it under inventory s0153V1962.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The Van Gogh Museum presents this dark still life as a tonal exercise: a very limited range is enough to differentiate the potato skin, basketry, table and background.

01

Light selects rather than illuminates

Only a few surfaces receive a lighter ocher. These accents are enough to rotate the tubers in a space that remains almost nocturnal.

02

Wicker responds to round shapes

The long horizontal bands of the basket pass through the accumulation of potatoes. They oppose a braided structure with irregular volumes.

03

Potatoes form several groups

A central cluster fills the basket, a second spreads out to the left and a third moves away to the right. This distribution avoids rigid symmetry.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

F100/JH931, s0153V1962 and the 45 × 60.5 cm format identify this basket from the Van Gogh Museum, distinct from F116 and large compositions with several baskets.

Tone

Limited palette is a study choice

Browns, greens and ochres allow Van Gogh to seek out values and reflections without depending on bold colors.

Subject

The potato connects still life and peasant life

After The Potato Eaters, the tuber remains associated with working the land and the daily diet of Nuenen families.

Collection

The museum maintains several separate baskets

Inventory s0153V1962 corresponds to F100, while s0152V1962 designates F116, another canvas of different formats and layouts.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy should preserve the dark range, the pyramid of tubers, the strips of wicker, the scattered potatoes, the small ocher accents and the black green background.

  • Potatoes stacked above the basket
  • The clear horizontal bands of basketry
  • The group scattered on the left side
  • The large tubers lit on the right
  • The almost imperceptible passage from the table to the back
