À propos de l’œuvre
Nature morte avec deux bocaux et deux citrouilles, par Vincent van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh · September 1885 · Nuenen, Netherlands
Still life with two jugs and pumpkins, F59Reproduction of oil painting on canvas
Two jugs of green sandstone stand behind two pumpkins, one pale yellow and the other orange. The apparent symmetry is broken by the differences in size, handle and lighting of each object.
Look at the work
Two vertical jugs behind two heavy fruits
The largest jug occupies the left; its round handle is cut out on the bottom and a brown pattern animates its belly. On the right, the second container, slightly smaller, recedes in a green shadow.
The two pumpkins form a second pair in the foreground. The first, greenish yellow, is seen almost from the front; the second, more orange, shows powerful ribs and a dark stem directed towards the viewer.
Still life with two jugs and two pumpkins F59/JH921 is an oil on canvas mounted on a panel measuring 58 × 85 cm, painted in Nuenen in September 1885 and kept in a private collection in Switzerland.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
The composition is based on four very readable volumes, but Van Gogh avoids mechanical repetition. The curves of the handles, the narrow necks and the ribs of the fruits multiply the rhythms in a shallow space.
The jugs form an uneven pair
The left container is more massive and lighter. The one on the right, slightly offset backwards, gives sufficient depth to the row of objects.
Pumpkins concentrate color
The lemon yellow of the left fruit and the orange of the right fruit break the dominant green-brown. Their ribs are shaped by curved and thick touches.
The background connects all the shadows
Very dark greens extend into the table and around the containers. The contours appear or disappear depending on the light, which avoids too rigid a design.
Documented benchmarks
Precisely identify the original work
The title, references F59/JH921 and the format of 58 × 85 cm identify this composition with two jugs, distinct from Nuenen's numerous pot and bottle studies.
A canvas mounted on panel
The support is documented as a canvas fixed to wood. The paint thus retains the texture of the canvas while resting on a rigid base.
A work reported in Switzerland
The painting belongs to a private Swiss collection. It therefore does not carry a museum inventory number accessible to the public.
Sandstone and vegetables as an exercise in color
Cold green ceramics and orange-yellow pumpkins allow Van Gogh to compare matte surfaces, rounded volumes and complementary colors.
Your reproduction
What the painter must preserve
The copy must respect the two handles, the small patterns on the jugs, the yellow pumpkin in the center, the orange pumpkin on the right and the subtle green reflections on the table.
- The round handle of the large jug
- The brown pattern on each container
- The yellow pumpkin seen from the front
- The orange ribs of the right fruit
- The green shadows that unite background and table
