À propos de l’œuvre

Nature morte aux bouteilles et à la faïence, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · September -October 1885 · Nuenen

Still life with earthenware and bottles, F53Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

Three dark bottles, a large brown dish, stoneware pots and several common containers are tightened on a table. The almost monochrome range forces the eye to follow white reflections, labels and material differences.

Look at the work

Ordinary objects organized like silent architecture

The tall shapes of the bottles frame a lower set of dishes, pots and boxes. Tight overlays avoid gaps and build a solid frieze across the entire width.

The background almost shares the color of the bottles. Van Gogh brings them out with a few white accents, green edges and red touches that indicate traffic jams, labels and reflections.

Still life with earthenware and bottles F53/JH538 is a 40.1 × 56.3 cm oil on canvas painted in Nuenen in September - October 1885. It bears the inventory s0138V1962.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The work is based less on a strong general contrast than on small differences of browns, greens and whites capable of separating each container.

01

Three bottles punctuate the width

Placed on the left, center and right, their vertical silhouettes divide the composition and retain groups of objects lower down.

02

White reflections replace contours

A few thick marks on the dark glass are enough to loosen the shoulders, collars and bellies of an almost identical background.

03

The tableware opposes several materials

Pale sandstone, red-brown terracotta, black-green glass and matte surfaces are differentiated by the density and orientation of the fingerboard.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The Van Gogh Museum notice documents the format of 40.1 × 56.3 cm, F53/JH538, the inventory s0138V1962 and the date September - October 1885.

House

Probably familiar objects

The museum indicates that these tableware and bottles probably belonged to the daily use of the Van Gogh family in Nuenen.

Reuse

Another painting under still life

An x-ray revealed that Van Gogh reused a canvas on which he had previously painted a woman at work.

Light

Bottles released by the highlights

Their color almost blends in with the background; white and colorful touches make them readable without spectacular lighting.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must preserve the three glass silhouettes, the white highlights, the large brown dish, the stoneware containers, the inscriptions and the deep nuances of the background.

  • The stocky bottle on the far left
  • The central bottle with white reflections
  • The large brown dish seen while diving
  • The pot marked in the foreground
  • The black bottle placed in front of the light container
