Nature morte aux pommes de terre, par Vincent van Gogh

Still life with potatoes, F118Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

A terracotta pan overflows with potatoes, while other tubers disperse on a blue-black cloth. The yellow light transforms this everyday subject into a vigorous study of irregular shapes and complementary colors.

Look at the work

The potatoes overflow from the container and invade the foreground

The ocher container occupies the center and its rim disappears under the tubers. A few potatoes roll left and right, creating a larger composition than just the central cluster.

The dark fabric is painted in long brush strokes that go around objects. The yellows, ochres and browns of the potatoes stand out forcefully, without Van Gogh needing a light background.

Still life with potatoes F118/JH932 is an oil on canvas measuring 47 × 57 cm, today dated autumn 1886 in Paris. The Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen acquired it in 2024 under inventory 4343 (MK).

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The painting contrasts a warm, bright group with a blue-black fabric. The contours remain mobile: the brushstrokes follow the bumps, the eyes of the potatoes, the edge of the container and the folds of the fabric.

01

The container acts as a center of gravity

Its round shape brings together the main mass and visually retains the stacked potatoes. The scattered tubers then widen the movement towards the edges.

02

Yellow and blue reinforce each other

The ochres of the container and the potatoes are complementary to the blue of the fabric. This contrast gives a more Parisian intensity to a pattern associated with the Nuenen period.

03

The touch fits each surface

Short and rounded on the tubers, horizontal on the container, long and nervous in the fabric, it allows materials to be differentiated while maintaining a common rhythm.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The museum's current notice gives 47 × 57 cm, inventory 4343 (MK), an acquisition in 2024 and a creation in Paris in the fall of 1886.

Redating

The pan replaced the canvas in Paris

Long located in Nuenen in 1885, the work was redated after the identification of a "Parisian" saucepan made in Vallauris and the study of a canvas sold by a Parisian supplier.

Beneath the surface

A floral arrangement is located below

Technical research revealed a painting of flowers beneath the visible still life, showing that Van Gogh reused his support.

Acquisition

Entrance to the Boijmans Museum in 2024

After a long period in private collections and loans, the work was acquired with the support of several funds, associations and donors.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy should preserve the central cluster, scattered potatoes, ocher pan, bright yolks, blue-black fabric and the highly visible direction of the fingerboard.

  • The round pan in the center of the canvas
  • Potatoes stacked above the rim
  • The large tuber placed in the left foreground
  • Blue brush strokes that go around objects
  • The brightest yellow accents on skin
