Look at the work

A workshop inventory constructed by stacks and diagonals

On the left, three potteries are stacked above a cylindrical container. The large ocher bottle and the black bottle occupy the center, while a small square bottle juts out in front of them.

The brown object placed diagonally to the right breaks the succession of verticals. The light bowl placed at the lower edge forms a second oblique accent and attracts light towards the foreground.

Still life with pots, jars and bottles F178r/JH528 is a 29.5 × 39.5 cm oil on canvas painted in Nuenen in November 1884. It is kept at the Kunstmuseum Den Haag.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

Van Gogh models each container with a reduced range of browns, ochres and blacks, then uses a few lighter yellows to separate the planes.

01

Objects occupy the entire width

From the pot stacked on the left to the box inclined on the right, the shapes almost touch and produce an impression of abundance in a small format.

02

Two light accents guide the eye

The large ocher bottle in the center and the yellow bowl in the foreground emerge from a very dark brown environment.

03

The right diagonal gives depth

The box or case tilts towards the viewer. Its orange opening connects the background to the lower edge of the canvas.
