Melon as open volume
The ribs alternate green, yellow and white broken around orange flesh. The volume depends on these progressive passages and the shadow cast on the flat, not on a dark outline.

Artwork description
Claude Monet · Still life · Museu Calouste Gulbenkian
An open melon, peaches, grapes and a large plate of blue and white porcelain make up a generous still life. Monet contrasts the round shapes of the fruits with the geometry of the table and the lively decor of the ceramics.

Look at the work
On the right, the striated and cut melon shows its orange flesh between green and cream ribs. A bunch of grapes overflow from the dish and advance towards the edge of the table. On the left, the peaches are stacked in a compote bowl in front of a large set plate, the blue decoration of which immediately catches the eye.
The white tablecloth does not serve as a neutral background: its folds create diagonals and shadow areas that connect objects. The gray wall, more stable, brings out the fruits and porcelain. The warm oranges of the melon and peaches respond to the intense blue of the decor, while the grapes introduce a duller transition.
The richness of the painting is born from three very different materials - fruit, porcelain and fabric - which Monet unites through light and a play of complementary colors.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
The ribs alternate green, yellow and white broken around orange flesh. The volume depends on these progressive passages and the shadow cast on the flat, not on a dark outline.
The blue and white decor creates an almost graphic surface behind the peaches. It should remain precise but slightly integrated with the overall touch, so as not to appear printed above the paint.
The folds lead the compote tree's gaze towards the melon then towards the grapes. The whites contain beige, gray, pink and blue, which gives the fabric its weight and depth.
Reference image
The reference makes it possible to distinguish the details of the porcelain decoration, the variations of the melon skin and the colored shadows of the tablecloth, three determining elements for a faithful copy.
Plate, peaches, melon and grapes respond to each other in shape, while the edge of the table stabilizes the whole.
Cold porcelain intensifies the warm tones of the fruits and gives energy to the composition.
The rough skin of the melon, the softness of the peaches, the shine of the grapes and the matte tablecloth require different touches.
