Artwork description
Claude Monet · Étretat · 1886 · W1042
The Aiguille d'Étretat stands alone on the left, facing the large cliff pierced by the Porte d'Aval. The calm sea occupies more than half of the canvas and extends the rocks with blue, pink and gray reflections. Signed and dated Claude Monet 86, this oil on vertical canvas measuring 81 × 65 cm is kept at the Kreeger Museum under number 1963.14 and corresponds to Wildenstein 1042.

Look at the work
The Needle rises from the water without touching the left edge. On the right, the wider cliff is cut by a clear arch which reveals the sky. The large interval between the two rocks becomes a luminous passage towards the horizon.
Bluish gray, mauve, pink and green shape the stone without dominant brown. The water takes on these colors in the form of more diffuse horizontal touches, while the very clear sky reduces contrasts and envelops the pattern with a uniform mist.
The vertical format not only monumentalizes the cliffs: it also gives an unusual depth to the column of reflections that descends to the foreground.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
The museum identifies this precise viewpoint from the Étretat series. The Needle is isolated on the left and the Porte d'Aval opens into the right cliff.
The two rocks are separated by a large space of sky and sea. The ark adds a second, smaller void, which repeats this breathing.
The color of the cliffs descends into the water but gradually fragments. The foreground remains mobile and colder than the rock masses.
Reference image
Only one exact image of W1042 is used in the listing and as the sole Shopify media. The real WebP measures 736 × 923 px, respects the proportions of the canvas and has not undergone any artificial enlargement.
The clear space around its silhouette is essential to the readability of W1042.
The ark must not close in shadow; it must reveal the sky and the horizon.
The foreground should retain its blues, pinks and grays in soft horizontal touches.
Documented benchmarks
The Kreeger Museum documents The Needle and the Downstream Gate seen from the west, oil on canvas from 1886, 81 × 65 cm, accession 1963.14 and Wildenstein catalog 1042.
Monet takes the Aiguille and the arches of Étretat from different points on the coast. Each painting associates a precise topography with a particular state of the air and the sea.
David and Carmen Kreeger acquired the painting before the museum opened. Issue 1963.14 preserves traces of this ancient entrance.
The dated signature is visible near the lower edge and confirms the campaign of 1886, when Monet multiplied his views of the Normandy coast.
