From the rocks accessible at low tide, Monet looks at the Aiguille d'Étretat through the immense opening of the Porte d'Aval. The nearby cliff becomes a dark mass that envelops the left edge and top of the canvas, while the light makes the white needle and the sea appear in the distance. This 65 × 92 cm oil on canvas, listed Wildenstein 1049, is kept at the National Gallery of Canada under number 43002.

Look at the work

An almost black arch transforms the Needle into a luminous apparition

The framing is exceptionally close together. The wall of the Downstream Gate occupies most of the left and continues above the opening; the viewer finds himself as if under the rock, facing a narrow passage where the needle, the shore and the marine horizon overlap.

The browns, greens and purples of the cliff do not form a flat area. Small touches of color enliven its surface, then a chalky border captures the light on the interior of the arch. On the right, the pink, blue and cream sky gives the composition its backlight.

Monet does not describe Étretat from the promenade: he looks for a risky viewpoint, at water level, which aligns two rock formations and makes the Porte d'Aval a frame inside the painting.

The nearby cliff as a monumental foreground

Its mass cuts the landscape and deliberately reduces the field of vision. It gives an overwhelming scale to the coast and forces the eye to pass through the clear opening of the arch.

The Needle placed in the light

The monolith stands out in the center of the opening with cold whites, blues and ochres. Its vertical silhouette responds to the curve of the arch without merging with it.

A backlight constructed by color

The rock is never black: it retains greens, mauves and browns. These shades make possible the transition to the thin white ridge then to the pastel sky.

The faint accents at the foot of the cliffs give scale to the geological masses without distracting attention from the main contrast.

Campaign01

Étretat during the winter of 1885-1886

Monet returns at length to the Normandy cliffs and varies the times, tides and viewing angles in order to avoid the framing already established by the painters who preceded him.

Viewpoint02

Rocks discovered only at low tide

The museum specifies that Monet looks northwest from a difficult to access area. This position allows for the spectacular alignment of the Needle and the Downstream Gate.

Collection03

Donated from the Marjorie and Gerald Bronfman collection in 2010

The work, noted for its backlighting during the Monet exhibition of 1908 at Durand-Ruel, then joined the Canadian national collections.
