À propos de l’œuvre

La Seine près de Vétheuil, par Claude Monet

Claude Monet · A bank of the Seine in 1878 · Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen

The Seine near Vétheuil W477hand painted reproduction

A bank covered with herbs and flowers descends from the left foreground to the Seine. The river widens to the right under a sky covered with cream, gray-mauve and blue clouds. Monet describes neither monument nor human activity: he constructs a direct encounter between nearby vegetation, mobile water and a changing atmosphere.

Look at the work

The curve of the bank opens the landscape towards the river

The bank begins almost against the viewer. Vertical grasses, yellow flowers, red passages and gray-green bushes occupy the entire left side. Their limit follows a downward curve which leads towards a small advance of land, then towards the very low horizon.

The Seine fills the right half with short touches of blue-gray, mauve and white. Above, the sky takes up even more space: thick clouds stretch diagonally and reveal turquoise areas. The colors of the air are found in the water, without forming a symmetrical reflection.

The eye starts from a few flowers within reach, follows the bank and finds itself almost without transition in front of the immensity of the sky and the Seine.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A plant diagonal to organize depth

The bank does not form a simple border. Its slope and narrowing measure space, while the tufts in the foreground give scale to the large body of water.

02

Two opposing but connected materials

The vegetation is laid in thick, vertical and intertwined touches. The water uses shorter, horizontal gestures; the common blues, mauves and greens nevertheless maintain unity.

03

An active sky without spectacular effect

Clouds occupy a large area and move in long bands. Their warm grays, creams and blues suggest unstable light rather than a storm or sunset.

Reference image

Read this specific version

The unique reference corresponds to the 2612 inventory (MK) of the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen. The file of 2,880 × 2,118 px retained its native dimensions, without enlargement, then was encoded in WebP.

Composition01

A first shot that remains open

Tall grass occupies the lower edge, but several intervals reveal the water. This alternation avoids a rigid separation between the bank and the river.

Color02

Greens crossed by yellows and reds

Plants do not form a uniform mass. Cold greens coexist with ocher, lemon yellow and some rusty accents which bring the bank closer together.

Matter03

A touch adapted to each distance

Brushstrokes are broad and distinct in the grass, tighter on the water, then stretched across the sky. Their change of scale builds depth.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

Painted in 1878, this 62 × 83 cm oil on canvas is kept in Rotterdam under inventory 2612 (MK) and bears the Wildenstein number 477.

Installation01

Monet arrived in Vétheuil in 1878

After the lively urban views of Argenteuil and Paris, the painter turns to the quieter banks of this village in Vexin. The Seine, the hillsides and the changes of season become its main motifs.

Look02

An almost entirely deserted landscape

The museum notice highlights the abandonment of busy city scenes in favor of landscapes without figures. Interest shifts towards variations in light and color due to time.

Collection03

Acquired with the Van Beuningen collection

The painting entered the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in 1958 with the ensemble of DG van Beuningen. It is registered there under number 2612 (MK).

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • Preserve the exact curve of the bank and its gradual passage towards the horizon.
  • Differentiate the vertical touches of the grass from the horizontal gestures of the Seine.
  • Preserve the mauve, cream and turquoise nuances of the sky without uniformizing them.
  • Maintain the small yellow and red flowers that give the scale of the foreground.
