À propos de l’œuvre

La Seine à Vetheuil, par Claude Monet

Claude Monet · The light of early autumn in 1878 · MuMa Le Havre

The Seine at Vétheuil W481hand painted reproduction

Two banks of poplars frame a quiet arm of the Seine and open a luminous gap towards the center. The village disappears almost entirely: Monet paints less of a recognizable place than the dialogue of the sky, the trees and their reflection. The fragmented touch makes blues, pinks and greens vibrate even in the quietest areas.

Look at the work

An arm of the Seine becomes a mirror of light

On the left, several poplars rise in narrow silhouettes; on the right, denser vegetation advances towards the center. Between these two masses, the bank lowers and lets the sky breathe. No hard outline separates the trees from the atmosphere: their foliage is constructed by superimposing small touches of blue, green, pink and orange.

The water takes up the composition by reversing it, but without forming a mechanical reflection. The verticals dissolve in more transparent and colder passages. In the foreground, the light blue gains intensity; further on, the reflections mingle with the banks and deliberately make the limit between land and river uncertain.

The landscape is barely recognizable: the autumn light becomes its real subject.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A central opening without a line of flight

The depth arises from the spacing of the two banks and the progressive reduction of the trees. Monet avoids an overly visible geometric perspective.

02

The sky extended in the water

Milky blues, pale pinks and mauve grays flow from top to bottom. The reflection ensures the continuity of the entire surface.

03

A touch already almost abstract

The trees are still identifiable, but each mass is broken down into colored signs. At a short distance, the material takes precedence over the pattern.

Reference image

Read this specific version

The unique reference comes directly from MuMa Le Havre and corresponds to the canvas 2004.3.52. The official file measures 1,200 × 976 px; it is kept at its native definition, without enlargement, then converted to WebP.

Composition01

Two plant masses in balance

The poplars on the left are thin and spaced; the right bank is more compact. The central gap prevents the composition from closing.

Color02

Cold colors crossed by heat

Blue dominates, but very diluted pinks, mauves, yellows and reds enliven the sky, the foliage and their reflections.

Matter03

A vibrational material

Short keys cross or overlap. In water, they lengthen slightly to suggest a moving surface without erasing the texture.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The MuMa documents this oil on canvas from 1878 under inventory 2004.3.52; the Wildenstein catalog raisonné classifies it under number 481.

Context01

Monet's installation in Vétheuil

Faced with financial difficulties, Monet left Argenteuil in 1878 and settled in Vétheuil, on a loop of the Seine about eighty kilometers from Paris.

Light02

A transfigured beginning of autumn

The MuMa instructions emphasize the blond light which transforms the small arm of the river and the role of fleeting reflections from the sky and the trees.

Provenance03

The Olivier Senn collection

The painting entered Olivier Senn's collection around 1931. His granddaughter Hélène Senn-Foulds gave it to MuMa with the family ensemble in 2004.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • Maintain the central opening and density difference between the two banks.
  • Circulate the same blues and pinks from the sky towards the water without creating rigid symmetry.
  • Preserve warm accents scattered throughout the foliage.
  • Reproduce the fragmented touch without smoothing transitions or hardening contours.

Presentation in your interior

A palette designed with the room

Its luminous blues, misty roses and balanced composition are suitable for a living room, bedroom or reading space. A light oak, patinated silver or matte gold frame accompanies the light without weighing down the canvas.
