Trois rendus pour une même œuvre

Claude Monet · 1904 · former MNR 214 · W1667

Water lilies W1667hand painted reproduction

Strips of white, pink and yellow flowers cross a dark green pool where the reflections descend in long touches. Signed and dated 1904, this almost square canvas is listed as Wildenstein 1667. Formerly known under the number MNR 214, it was returned in 1999 to the beneficiaries of the merchant Paul Rosenberg.

Look at the work

A dense pool where flowers punctuate the depth

Water lilies line up in several irregular planes from the lower edge to the bottom vegetation. Each frieze is interrupted by areas of dark water, which avoids any too regular decorative effect and maintains depth.

Greens dominate, but they divide into acidic yellows, cold blues and almost black browns. The flowers, placed in small thick touches, become luminous bursts on water crossed by vertical reflections.

W1667 organizes the pool like a succession of thresholds: the flowers bring the surface closer together, the reflections open it in depth.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A precisely documented version

The official notice gives an oil on canvas of 90 × 92 cm, signed and dated "Claude Monet 1904" at the bottom right, corresponding to Wildenstein number 1667.

02

From the tapestry model to the MNR course

The canvas served as a model for a Gobelins tapestry and was shown at Durand-Ruel in 1909. Spoliated from Paul Rosenberg during the war, it was recovered, deposited in Caen then returned to its beneficiaries in 1999.

03

Denser space than neighboring versions

Unlike Water Lilies leaving large areas of clear water, this canvas multiplies the plant bands. The material and green contrasts play a particularly strong role.

Reference image

Read this specific version

Only one image is used: the official front photograph of the C2RMF, converted into a real WebP of 3,000 × 2,935 px, without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

Curls that are never straight

The flower groups undulate, tighten and interrupt. Their irregularity must be preserved so that the pool remains natural and deep.

Color02

Deep greens, yellow, pink and white

Dark tones structure water and reflections. Flowers should remain small, bright accents, without being enlarged or made too sharp.

Matter03

Vertical under floating keys

The reflections descend behind the leaves. Reproduction must maintain this superposition of directions, essential to the ambiguity between surface and depth.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The official MNR directory documents this painting under the old MNR number 214; the catalog raisonné la classe Wildenstein 1667.

Identification01

Water lilies, Wildenstein 1667

This oil on canvas from 1904 measures 90 × 92 cm. It is signed and dated lower right and also appears in the sources under the historical title Water Lilies Pond.

Historical02

Former MNR 214, restitution from 1999

After its recovery in Germany, the work was entrusted to the National Museums and deposited at the Caen Museum of Fine Arts under number 75-1-23, before its restitution.

Exposure03

Durand-Ruel, Les Nymphéas, 1909

The painting appeared in Monet's exhibition dedicated to water landscapes. It was then loaned from 1910 to 1913 to Gustave Geffroy for the Manufacture des Gobelins.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The exact version of the old MNR 214, Wildenstein 1667
  • The original almost square format of 90 × 92 cm
  • Irregular bands of flowers spread over several depths
  • Dark greens and vertical reflections preserved under the material
