Artwork description
Claude Monet · 1914 -1917 · Barberini MB-Mon-33 · W1803
On a two-meter square canvas, Monet extends the Giverny basin to the limits of the gaze. A large dark green mass crosses the center, punctuated by a few purple, yellow and white flowers. In the lower part, water lilies and blue reflections mingle with long plant trails; the white edges leave the artist's progressive work visible.

Look at the work
The upper register is dominated by a horizontal band of emerald green, turquoise and bluish black. The flowers are small, spaced and constructed by purple, white or yellow accents. Their rarity reinforces the magnitude of the water instead of making it an orderly garden.
Under this band, the keys go down further. The greens mix with the deep blue and purple, then encounter wider leaves in the lower corners. The clear reserves around the perimeter deliberately interrupt the color and remind us that the surface has been worked in successive campaigns.
The pool is no longer a landscape seen from afar: it becomes a field of gestures where water, reflections and plants share the same material.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
The 200 × 200 cm format allows the eye to circulate between several groups of flowers and leaves. No pattern dominates permanently; the composition is based on densities and intervals.
The dark mass at the top of the painting acts as an internal horizon, although it is made up of plants and reflections. It gives stability to the more vertical and freer gestures of the lower part.
The Museum Barberini emphasizes that white areas are not enough to define the canvas as unfinished. They participate in the breathing of the composition and make the stages of the work visible.
Reference image
The Museum Barberini's only official image measures 2,400 × 2,409 px. It has been converted into a real WebP at its native resolution, without artificial enlargement.
The purple and yellow corollas remain small facing the two meters of the painting. Their precise placement structures the space; magnifying them would profoundly modify the rhythm of the original.
The plant palette is constantly changing temperature. Cobalt blue, deep green, emerald and mauve overlap, while the flowers bring brief warm notes.
Brushstrokes lengthen, cross and sometimes leave the clear canvas visible. Faithful reproduction should maintain these interruptions and amplitude rather than smooth the surface.
Documented benchmarks
This information concerns the Water Lilies of the Museum Barberini, inventory MB-Mon-33 and Wildenstein 1803.
Dated 1914 -1917, this oil on canvas measures exactly 200 × 200 cm. It bears a signature stamp "Claude Monet" in the lower left corner.
The museum notice links the work to a group of around forty views of the water garden created during these years, when Monet developed a broader touch and compositions close to abstraction.
Images filmed in 1914 show Monet working on this composition in his studio. The painting then remained in the family and was passed on to Michel Monet before passing through several collections.
